Young doctor passionate about scientific research to save patients

Having just stopped examining a patient, Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy, Deputy Head of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery (K Hospital) hurriedly walked into the operating room - the surgery for a thyroid cancer patient was waiting for the doctor. The doctor's small, agile figure immersed himself in the surgery. Despite the difficulties before each surgery, with the aim of finding new diagnostic and treatment methods, new surgical techniques to help bring the highest treatment efficiency, Dr. Quoc Duy always tries his best, persistently pursuing his passion to achieve the best results.

Can only be the passion of the young generation

After a successful surgery, Dr. Duy came out full of energy to share as promised.

“If passion is the road to success, then perseverance is the vehicle that takes you there. Without passion, we will easily give up. When working with passion, it means we are enjoying the job, not working hard. However, if you have passion but are not persistent, it will be difficult to succeed. This is even more true in scientific research with many difficulties and hardships. The path of scientific research is the compass to have the opportunity to help more patients recover" - Dr. Ngo Quoc

Duy shared his journey to where he is today.

Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy, only 35 years old, has many outstanding achievements, including the research "Thyroidectomy technique through the oral vestibule in children". This research has opened a new step forward in the treatment of thyroid diseases in children. Head and neck cancer is a difficult and deep specialty that Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy is passionate about and determined to pursue to the end.

Doctor Quoc Duy is happiest when he sees patients and their families when they are discharged from the hospital after successfully applying the endoscopic thyroidectomy technique through the oral vestibule at the Department of Head and Neck Surgery, K Hospital. "I still remember the smile of a 15-year-old patient and her mother when they had successful surgery to treat thyroid cancer when the disease was in a very early stage, the possibility of recovery was very high and especially the patient was very happy when there was no scar on his neck", Doctor Duy shared in a warm but powerful voice.

Among the achievements in scientific research, it is necessary to mention the applied research and development of new techniques in thyroid surgery. In 2018, after a period of research, together with his teachers, Dr. Duy began to implement the technique of endoscopic thyroidectomy through the oral vestibule in Vietnam. This method has many outstanding advantages compared to other thyroid surgery methods. In addition, Dr. Duy was also fortunate to be invited to report at the International Conference on Endoscopic Thyroid Surgery and directly teach foreign surgeons about this technique.

“I have also successfully applied this technique on children with the largest number of patients successfully operated on at a medical facility reported in the medical literature. This study has opened a new step forward in the treatment of thyroid diseases in children. In addition, I have also applied this approach in lateral neck dissection for thyroid cancer treatment, which has initially been recognized by international experts. This is demonstrated by being voted as one of the 10 best techniques at the 2021 International Congress of Surgical Oncology of the United States - SSO and published in a prestigious international journal Q1 with IF 3.7.

In addition, under the guidance of my teachers, I continued to successfully apply robotic surgery to resect the thyroid gland through the oral vestibule in the treatment of thyroid cancer. This result was published in the international journal Q1 and is the first report in Southeast Asia to successfully deploy the technique of resect the thyroid gland using a robotic technique through the oral vestibule in the treatment of thyroid cancer. This is a milestone marking the development of the surgical specialty in general, as well as in the field of thyroid surgery in particular in Vietnam" - Prof. Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy shared more.

The young doctor believes that medicine is always developing and making more and more progress in diagnosing and treating diseases in general and cancer in particular. Therefore, researching and updating new diagnostic tools and treatment techniques to help improve the survival time as well as improve the quality of life for cancer patients is extremely necessary. Understanding that, I personally consider the path of scientific research as a guideline to have the opportunity to help more patients recover from the disease.

Talking about his student, Professor, Dr. Le Van Quang, Director of K Hospital, said: He is a person with logical thinking, intelligence, and creativity. Quoc Duy is especially studious and likes to listen to opposing opinions. This is an important factor for him to develop his creativity and improve his skills. Quoc Duy is also a doctor with good foreign language skills and the ability to write standard international articles, which helps Quoc Duy access advanced medical backgrounds in the world to expand his knowledge and grow further.

There are miracles in treating the sick.

Talking about the research direction focusing on applying new techniques in the treatment of head and neck cancer, especially thyroid cancer, Dr. Quoc Duy said: “Thyroid cancer is a common cancer, ranking 10th among cancers in general. The disease is common in women and tends to be younger. In the treatment of thyroid cancer, surgery plays the most important role and open surgery is the classic method of treatment.

However, this method often leaves scars in the front neck area, which affects aesthetics, especially in young women. Therefore, I have participated in many studies in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer, and especially in the application and development of new techniques in thyroid surgery, which not only help increase survival time but also achieve the highest aesthetics.

Thyroid cancer is a disease with a good prognosis if diagnosed and treated promptly. Recently, many people have proactively screened for early detection of cancer and promptly detected the disease to have the best treatment plan. Thyroid cancer tends to be younger, with many cases of patients under 30 years old being diagnosed with this disease. Each year, the department performs surgery on about 3,000 patients with thyroid disease, mainly thyroid cancer, and tends to be more each year than the previous year.

The journey of conquering difficulties in the profession, from when he was a student until now becoming a highly skilled surgeon, has made Quoc Duy realize one thing, perseverance and initiative in everything will open the door to opportunities wider.

Working with cancer patients for many years, along with many successes there are also failures. For him, failure is to reflect, to overcome shortcomings and to increasingly perfect his skills.

With a passion for scientific research, Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy always tries his best to contribute a small part to the development of the country's medicine, in the training of the next generations and always aims to bring the best treatment results for cancer patients.

Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy has 62 published scientific articles, of which 29 are in prestigious international journals: 13 in Q1 journals (all 13 are main authors), 3 in Q2 journals (all 3 are main authors), 4 in Q3 journals (3 are main authors), 9 in Scopus journals (5 are main authors).

The young doctor received the Golden Globe Science and Technology Award in 2023; Creative Youth Badge; Advanced Youth Badge following Uncle Ho's teachings and the Excellence Award at the 21st Conference on Science and Technology for Youth in the Medical Industry.

The nomination for the Vietnam Young Faces Award of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union aims to recognize and honor typical young people under 35 years old with outstanding achievements in 10 fields: Study; scientific research - creativity; production; business - start-up; national defense; security and order; sports; social activities; culture and arts; State administrative management.
