With the viewpoint of determining environmental protection as a central, regular, continuous and long-term task, Dong Trieu City and enterprises have made efforts to protect the environment in coal production and mining.
Currently, in Dong Trieu City, there are 7 units licensed to operate in coal mining, trading, consumption, and electricity production, located in 7 communes and wards: Mao Khe, Yen Tho, Hoang Que, Hong Thai Tay, Hong Thai Dong, Binh Khe, Trang Luong. Of which, TKV has 4 member units, with a boundary to protect, manage, and exploit mining resources of 42.829 km2; Dong Bac Corporation has 3 member units.
Underground and open-pit mining projects of units under TKV and Dong Bac Corporation operating in Dong Trieu City have basically completed all legal procedures on the environment, such as: Environmental impact assessment report (EIA), environmental license, environmental improvement and restoration project, water exploitation license, wastewater discharge into water sources, environmental improvement and restoration plan... approved by competent authorities. In addition, the coal industry has invested in 8 automatic and continuous wastewater environmental monitoring systems and transmitted data directly to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (Dong Bac Corporation 3 stations, TKV 5 stations).
Most of the wastewater from mines and coal mines has been collected and treated thoroughly; coal industry units have invested in the construction of 7 centralized industrial wastewater treatment plants...
Regarding solid waste, mainly mine waste rock and soil, generated mainly from coal mining activities, some of the mine waste rock and soil volumes are used as materials for leveling the ground for some investment projects in the area, the remaining volume forms waste dumps that are restored by mining units, and trees are planted to cover the waste dumps. Every year, coal industry units have invested in projects and plans to improve and restore the environment in post-mining areas, waste dumps, and ditch systems with items such as: planting trees to restore the environment, dredging stream beds, building embankments and reinforcing dams, and implementing environmental protection deposits according to the content of the environmental improvement and restoration project approved by competent authorities.
Regarding the treatment of domestic solid waste and hazardous waste, every year, companies sign contracts with competent units to collect, transport and treat domestic solid waste and hazardous waste; establish a register of hazardous waste source owners for management according to regulations. Environmental protection at waste dumps is of interest to units, building surrounding water collection systems; planting environmental trees; building stone barriers at waste dumps... to ensure safety and protect the environment.
Notably, coal transportation by units licensed to exploit in the area is carried out on dedicated roads, internal mine roads, and coal conveyor belts to consumption at Ben Can port of TKV and Hong Thai Tay port of Dong Bac Corporation; no transportation on National Highway 18A is carried out, so environmental sanitation and traffic safety are basically guaranteed.
To handle exhaust gas and dust, the City People's Committee always encourages and creates conditions for enterprises, production and business units to research and apply production types with high technology content and environmental friendliness. Up to now, most companies in the city have invested in new technology production systems, with modern technology exhaust gas treatment systems to minimize emissions into the environment.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dat, Deputy Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Dong Trieu City, said: Every year, the City People's Committee organizes a conference to evaluate the results of implementing coordination tasks and propose tasks and contents to continue coordinating with coal industry units in the coming time. In the coming time, the City People's Committee will continue to direct agencies, units, People's Committees of communes and wards to strengthen state management of environmental protection in the area, effectively implement relevant legal provisions and Resolution No. 10-NQ/TU (dated September 26, 2022) of the Provincial Party Committee on strengthening the Party's leadership in resource management, environmental protection, disaster prevention and mitigation, climate change response, and ensuring water security in the period of 2022-2030".
