Shin Tae-yong watches the Indonesian team play attentively. |
A photo of coach Shin Tae-yong and his assistants watching Indonesia's match against Australia on a big screen in Jakarta has been circulating on social media. The Korean coach has not left Indonesia yet because he still has some unfinished business. He is using his free time to watch his former students' performances.
In the first leg, coach Shin helped Indonesia hold Australia to a 0-0 draw. After the Korean coach was fired, Patrick Kluivert took over but the team suffered a 1-5 defeat against the "Socceroos". The naturalized stars of the Indonesian team had a terrible day when they continuously made mistakes and wasted opportunities.
"It's not Kluivert's fault but appointing him as coach is wrong," one fan commented. "Firing Shin Tae-yong to bring in a terrible coach who is labeled a legend. What a stupid decision," said an Indonesian fan. "Shin must be laughing inside," said a third.
The heavy defeat in Sydney dealt a heavy blow to Indonesia's ambitions to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Not only did the Southeast Asian team fall out of the play-off group, their goal difference also dropped to -7, only better than China's -10.
