Gold price this afternoon, March 21, in the world reached 3,028.71 USD/ounce, down 11.4 USD compared to the previous session. Gold futures in the US also decreased 0.3%, down to 3,035.70 USD.
According to Kelvin Wong, senior analyst at OANDA Asia-Pacific, the main reason for the slight decline in gold prices is the strengthening of the US dollar against major currencies.
Gold prices are currently under profit-taking pressure after the Philadelphia Fed survey showed manufacturing activity remained stable in March. The decision of the Bank of England (BoE) to keep interest rates unchanged also contributed to the cautious sentiment.
The Philadelphia Fed's manufacturing business outlook index fell to 12.5 from 18.1 in February, but was still above the forecast of 8.8, indicating that manufacturing activity, although down slightly, was still better than expected.
Despite the lackluster economic data, gold saw some profit-taking after the recent rally. Alex Ebkarian, CEO of Allegiance Gold, said speculators were taking advantage of the opportunity.
He said that whenever gold prices peak, there is often selling pressure to take profits. Ebkarian also shared that gold has not really become a safe haven asset for retail investors because the economy has not yet entered a recession.
Meanwhile, other precious metals such as silver, platinum and palladium all fell. Specifically, silver fell 1.4% to $ 33.08 / ounce, platinum fell 0.3% to $ 982.20 and palladium fell 0.6% to $ 946.75. All three metals recorded losses for the week.
