On the morning of September 12, in the home match against Luxembourg in Group J of the Euro 2024 qualifiers, Portugal did not have the service of captain Ronaldo due to suspension. Goncalos Ramos played as a center forward while Raphael Leao, Diogo Jota and Bernardo Silva played behind.
Against the opponent ranked 89th in the world, Portugal quickly overwhelmed and Luxembourg could only hold out for the first 10 minutes. In the 12th minute, Goncalo Inacio jumped high to head the opening score from a pass from Bruno Fernandes.
Portugal continued to play well, causing the opposing team to make repeated defensive mistakes at the Do Algarve stadium. Five minutes after the opening goal, Portugal doubled the gap thanks to Goncalo Ramos.
During the remaining time of the first half, Seleccao scored 2 more goals, both by Inacio and Ramos, ending the first 45 minutes with a score of 4-0 in favor of the Southern European representative.
In the second half, Portugal continued to "attack" and Luxembourg could not advance. In the 57th minute, Diogo Jota broke the offside trap and finished neatly, raising the score to 5-0.
Luxembourg almost gave up and offered no defense. From the 67th to the 88th minute, Portugal scored four more goals, thanks to Ricardo Horta, Jota, Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix.
In the end, coach Martinez's team won 9-0 against Luxembourg. This resounding victory helped coach Roberto Martinez's team continue to top Group J with 18 absolute points after 6 matches, scoring 24 goals and not conceding any.
In the qualifying round next October, Portugal will qualify for Euro 2024 if they beat second-placed Slovakia at home in Do Dragao (October 14) in their next match, and Luxembourg fails to win away at Iceland. According to UEFA regulations, the top two teams in the qualifying round will qualify for Euro 2024.
