At Belgium's largest annual agricultural fair, the Foire de Libramont, which recently took place in the Wallonia province of Luxembourg, alongside lush green fields and muscular 3B cows, a new wave of technology is quietly changing the face of agriculture.

The image of farmers with smartphones in hand, controlling automatic agricultural machinery or analyzing data collected from sensors has become familiar at the Libramont Agricultural Fair. A variety of digital technology solutions are introduced here, from farm management software, mobile applications, sensors, drones, robots... to data analysis systems based on artificial intelligence (AI). One of the outstanding applications is the satellite imaging system to monitor the growth of crops. Thanks to this technology, farmers can accurately determine the harvest time, the amount of fertilizer needed for each type of plant, thereby optimizing the production process and minimizing waste.

For example, the “Sunshine” project aims to help farmers know when is the best time to mow by providing information on grass height in different areas. The project uses satellite imagery and grass growth patterns, even when bad weather obscures the images. With this tool, farmers can know which areas need mowing first, when to change cow pastures, and more. Algorithms analyze satellite imagery to determine how much grass is available and combine it with weather predictions to give farmers the exact time to mow.

Many agtech startups are offering solutions to simplify administrative tasks and support management. For example, Fieldkaired has introduced software that helps dairy producers “take back control of their farm finances.” The software allows farmers to scan purchase invoices and enter data on depreciation, credit repayments, taxes, and other expenses. The tool gives farmers a clear view of their finances, milk production costs, and profits in real time. “Farmers can know every day if they are selling at a loss, without having to wait 12 to 18 months for accounting results,” explains Fieldkaired CEO Franck Dujarrier. “The software also helps farmers prove to the milk processing plant that their selling price is below cost.”

Big data and AI are revolutionizing agriculture. Sensors installed on machines, livestock and crops collect a large amount of data on weather, soil, crops, livestock, etc. This data is analyzed by artificial intelligence algorithms to make accurate decisions about production, helping farmers optimize efficiency and increase productivity. The above event shows that digital technology is becoming an indispensable part of modern agriculture. The application of digital technology not only helps farmers increase productivity, reduce costs but also contributes to environmental protection and food security.
