According to the Thai ethnic group, this is the day when children and grandchildren pay their respects to their ancestors, and it is an occasion for adults to pay special attention and care to the younger generation. Therefore, in many places, people also call Xip Xi the Children's Festival.
On this day, children are given colorful clothes by their grandparents and parents to wear during Tet. In addition, Tet also has the meaning of "summarizing" and celebrating the results of hard work in the first six months of the year. During the holiday, children do not have to herd buffaloes or do housework but can play freely.
In the past, Tet Xip Xi was usually celebrated only on the 14th day of the 7th lunar month. Nowadays, Tet Xip Xi is also celebrated in combination with the plowing ceremony and the summary of the days of production of the people, becoming an occasion to celebrate and unite the ethnic communities in Phu Hoa land. Strangers and familiar guests when coming to the families are warmly and thoughtfully welcomed by the host, enjoy typical dishes, enjoy the Xoe dance and immerse themselves in the unique cultural space.
Mr. Sa Duc Toan, Secretary of the Party Committee of Quang Huy Commune, Phu Yen District, said: This year, Tet Xip Xi is organized by Quang Huy Commune with more activities than every year, with culinary competitions, traditional ethnic costumes, and fun activities such as bamboo jumping and throwing balls, attracting a large number of tourists from within and outside the province.
The culinary competition had the participation of 11 teams from 11 lowland villages in Quang Huy commune. The teams combined creatively new dishes and traditional dishes, made from local products, combined with typical spices, creating rich dishes with the unique flavor of the Thai people of Muong Tac.
In the trays of offerings, two indispensable dishes are duck meat and banh it. Banh it, also known as banh cap, symbolizes a happy couple... Offering duck meat means wanting the duck to eat all the insects that harm the rice, carrying away bad luck down the river.
In the national costume competition, 11 girls from 11 villages performed traditional costumes of the Thai ethnic group in a graceful and delicate manner, not only highlighting the beauty of women, but also demonstrating creativity in developing and preserving the beauty of the Thai ethnic costumes of Phu Yen.
According to the district People's Committee, from the beginning of 2023, Phu Yen district has developed a plan and directed Quang Huy commune to focus on preparing and organizing the Xip Xi festival carefully and successfully. Thereby, contributing to preserving the cultural identity of ethnic groups, at the same time, preparing for the dossier to recognize the National Intangible Cultural Heritage for the Xip Xi festival of Phu Yen district.
