Last night, January 18, the Oriental Light Festival officially opened at Vinhomes Ocean Park 2 (Van Giang District, Hung Yen). The highlight of the festival was the announcement of the results of the international lantern design competition held for the first time in the world.
The competition attracted 16 large-scale lantern works crafted by artisans from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam, elaborately arranged along a nearly 2 km route. The works not only provide an opportunity to enjoy lantern art but also allow visitors to send their wishes for peace in the new year.
As a result, the lantern work "Hon thien dat Viet" by Hoi An Craft team won first prize. The work " Mr. Seo Deok Hwan Korea - God of Luck (Qilin)" by Korea won second prize.
In addition, Vietnam also had the work Long Phuong Sum Vay win third prize and the consolation prize went to the work Lac Long Quan Tro Ve.
Mr. Vo Hoang, a member of the Hoi An Craft team, said that the work "Sacred Soul of Vietnam" was 100% handmade with new material, paper made from Cam Thanh water coconut trees (Hoi An). This is a local material, produced in Hoi An. Putting Vietnamese cultural images on this paper shows everyone that in addition to traditional materials, Vietnam also has local materials. This is also an environmentally friendly material.
"It took us 5 years of research to create this type of paper. Instead of making lamps from fabric, the team wanted to create a new, unique product from its own materials. The work recreates the cultural heritage space of Hoi An, with the unique architectural scale of the Japanese Covered Bridge and creative stylizations, renewing familiar symbols of Dai Viet civilization with the language of light and color," said Mr. Hoang.
Marvel at the unique lanterns: Exquisite creations of Vietnamese artisans
Complimenting the first prize work, judge Chen Jia, Director of Culture - Yuyuan INC, a member of Fosun Group (China), commented: "Hoi An artisans have breathed life into the culture and long history of Vietnam into the lantern work, using the art of light to convey love and pride in the history of the nation as well as honoring traditional Vietnamese culture.
In particular, the work also shows the high creativity of Vietnamese artisans when using environmentally friendly materials, such as water coconut shells, to create an artistic masterpiece."
According to Ms. Chen Jia, with this special material, during the day, even when the lights are not on, this is still a complete work of art. At night, when lit up, this becomes a sculpture, with a delicate carving language, giving viewers two completely different experiences.
"We have been exposed to many creative methods in lantern art around the world, but this is the first time we have witnessed creativity in the way of Vietnamese artisans. This is also what touched the hearts of the jury members," Ms. Chen Jia shared.
Accepting the invitation to participate as a judge and being exposed to the works of Vietnamese artisans, Mr. Young Soo Seo - Chairman of the Jinju Arts and Culture Association of Korea, highly appreciated the skills of Vietnamese artisans.
"The first international lantern competition will help promote Vietnam's lantern culture to tourists. In addition, it will also help Vietnam introduce a new, beautiful image and promote Vietnam's traditions to tourists," said Mr. Young Soo Seo.
At the lantern festival, for the first time, the world-famous Yuyuan Lantern Festival will be present in Vietnam with a familiar theme of Asian legends called Strange Tales of the Mountains and Seas.
The Lantern Festival will last for 58 days, throughout the Lunar New Year of the Snake 2025. This is a "super festival" consisting of a series of festivals with 580 activities, spanning throughout the Lunar New Year of the Snake 2025.
