'Wandering the streets of Hoi An' with Tam Thai

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên04/03/2025

Revealing the opportunity to have the photo book, author Tam Thai said: "In 1972, I came to Hoi An and stayed there for a year, starting my life. I stayed in an old house at the end of Cuong De Street (now Tran Phu Street). I ate at Ong Bon Street and slept at Chua Cau Street. On Saturday nights, I rode my old "Su 50" back to Da Nang. At that time, I loved taking photos, but I had not yet bought a camera and was still very carefree, so I took photos for fun. After that, I went to study and work in Saigon. Every Tet holiday when I returned to Da Nang, I would spend one or two sessions holding my camera to take photos of Hoi An. This book is the result of many trips and feeling some of the changes of Hoai Pho over time. The photos still retain the most dear memories, even though I have aged with the years".

Each picture in the book has bilingual captions in Vietnamese and English. "The place I remember most is the Tinsmith crossroads. After decades of returning, I still see the old man sitting hunched over next to the barrels. The barrels that I saw lined up in long rows, waiting for water at the village well, on dry early mornings, since my childhood," the author said.

The book has many pictures of small corners, daily activities of residents, and even light street vendors. "In Saigon, instant noodles and banh bao chi have been transferred to three-wheeled vehicles. In Hanoi, tofu pudding and green rice are brought to the streets by bicycle. In Hoi An, there are still many street vendors: cao lau, mixed mussels, banh beo, tofu, sweet bean soup..." That's why he tried to capture this topic as "a reserve" in his latest work.

Feeling about the photo book Hoi An Wandering the Streets of Memories , poet Le Minh Quoc said: "Through the new book of photographer Tam Thai, I think viewers will sympathize when reminded of what they have seen, looked at, and admired... and preciously, Tam Thai, with his ability to combine photography and recording, has preserved it. Maybe looking at this photo, that photo, suddenly in the subconscious echoes the sigh of lost time: Hearing the sound of frogs in the ear/Startled, still thinking it was someone calling for the ferry " .
