On the evening of January 18, there was unexpected information that the initial explanation of the national gymnastics team's coaching board regarding the accusations of "dark areas" at the national athletes' training facility that Dan Tri newspaper had previously published.
The above sources said that, at the explanation session on the same day, the coaching board of the national gymnastics team admitted to establishing two types of funds, including the Central Fund and the Domestic and Foreign Fund, collected from contributions from athletes and coaches.
The purpose of the fund is to be used whenever necessary, related to team members such as visiting sick family members, birthdays, parties, funerals, etc. The coaches do not take personal advantage in collecting this fund.
According to this source, during the Covid-19 outbreak in previous years, Hanoi had to be locked down, the Hanoi National Sports Training Center had to completely ban camps, and the teams, including the Gymnastics team, still practiced to maintain their form.

Clues to be clarified
Faced with the above information, former national gymnasts Pham Nhu Phuong and Lam Nhu Quynh (the brave people who stood up to denounce the incident) felt surprised, even indignant, as they thought that the above explanations were trying to "turn black into white".
"Is that true? Just want to ask again, is that true?", athlete Pham Nhu Phuong expressed indignantly.

Speaking to Dan Tri reporter, athlete Pham Nhu Phuong said: "All athletes and coaches in the Gymnastics team must return 50% of the "Sunday wages" to Ms. Nguyen TTT.
We never knew what Ms. T would use the money for or how it would be spent. If there was a funeral, a happy occasion, or to support flood victims, we had to pay separately.
By March 2023, she had proposed two different funds, one called the central fund and it was explained that this fund was for submission to the Hanoi National Sports Training Center.
One fund is the team's Internal and External Affairs Fund, which is understood to be used for common team matters or for foreign affairs. However, there has never been any transparency in the revenue and expenditure from the two funds mentioned above to us.

Regarding this issue, former national team member Lam Nhu Quynh continued to affirm that the fund money she had to pay to the head coach of the women's team Nguyen TTT was under the direction of the coaching staff.
"At that time, I was a 15 or 16-year-old athlete. Whatever the teachers told us, we had to follow. Whatever the teachers told us to pay for those funds, we paid, without being informed about what the funds would be used for or what they would spend on.
There is absolutely no way that the internal and external funds are used for funerals, weddings, or sauna treatments. There are never any receipts or payments made publicly on the group. If there are funerals, weddings, or flood relief, we still have to pay separately.
As for the money paid to the central fund, we don't even know what the fund is or what it's used for. We were only told to pay it to the central staff.
Because the money we received was not from our hard work and sweat, the teachers asked for it for us and then took back half of it, so we just followed suit."
In the documents that the athletes provided to Dan Tri, to cite the fund collected from athletes and coaches thanks to "not practicing but still receiving state benefits", there is a text message said to be from Ms. Nguyen T.TT., the head coach of the women's team, who informed the athletes and coaches to pay money to "Mr. T. Training Department" in November 2023.

According to the document, the athletes paid 3 months' salary (including July, August and September 2023) to a person named T. in the Training Department who is in charge of collecting the Center's fund, with the amount of 1,620,000 VND. Meanwhile, the coaches will have to pay 2,250,000 VND because they receive a higher "Sunday salary".
Athlete Pham Nhu Phuong said she did not know who Mr. T. was in charge of collecting the funds from the National Gymnastics Team's Center, because the money was transferred to Ms. Nguyen TTT and then she would be responsible for transferring it to Mr. T. at the center.

The Department of Sports and Physical Training established many inspection teams to thoroughly verify the incident.
Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Mr. Dang Ha Viet, Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training, said that on January 18, at the working session with the Department of Sports and Physical Training, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Ngoc Cuong concluded a number of important contents.
Accordingly, regarding the case involving the coach of the national women's gymnastics team who took back part of the athlete's bonus, the Department of Sports and Physical Training will urgently send a document and work with the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports to clarify the contents of the press's reflections related to the case.
The Department of Sports and Physical Training was directed to invite athlete Pham Nhu Phuong to work on matters related to the cancellation of the call-up to the national team today (January 19).
Regarding the content related to the reflection of Dan Tri newspaper about athletes not practicing on Sundays and holidays but still receiving state benefits, based on the direction of the Minister, the Department of Sports and Physical Training will establish inspection teams to verify the content of the press reflection.
The verification process needs to focus on clarifying the following contents:
- Does the national gymnastics team practice on Sundays and holidays?
- Is there a situation where coaches collect 50% of the athletes' training fees on Sundays and holidays (if any)?
- Check and review the team's attendance process for extra practice days, the number of athletes participating in practice and rest (if any).
- Report specific lesson plans and teaching materials on extra practice days as requested by the coach.
- Clarify the team's income as reported by the press.
- Management and training monitoring of related units at the Hanoi National Sports Training Center and the responsibilities of relevant collectives and individuals.
The Department of Sports and Physical Training was directed to urgently implement and complete information to provide to press agencies, and report the results to the Ministry's leaders on January 19.
