According to the direction of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department of Sports and Physical Training must report the entire incident related to athlete Pham Nhu Phuong of the National Gymnastics Team, who was accused of being charged "commission money" by the coach on January 25. However, up to this point, the Department of Sports and Physical Training has not yet reached a final conclusion and has had to continuously postpone the reporting date to the Ministry.
Speaking to the press on February 1, Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training Dang Ha Viet said: "The deadline to report to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is January 25, 2024, but we have not been able to complete it yet.
The Ministry has criticized and reminded the slow reporting of the incident in the gymnastics team. However, this issue is very complicated and needs to be carefully reviewed, including clarifying whether the athletes practiced or not, and for what purpose...
The case involving athlete Pham Nhu Phuong has yet to have a final conclusion.
In particular, as athlete Pham Nhu Phuong reflected, if you do not practice but get paid, it is a very big and dangerous problem. Therefore, we have to identify and re-check all receipts, expenditures, and timekeeping records for many years... which takes a lot of time.
To be honest, I and many leaders of the Department of Sports and Physical Training have to work continuously until 8-9pm to review the issues. We cannot rush."
The head of the Department of Sports and Physical Training said that when there is a final conclusion, the Department of Sports and Physical Training will report to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and at the same time widely announce it to the press.
"The Department of Sports and Physical Training affirms that it will handle this seriously to ensure deterrence. Vietnamese sports must be good, providing great examples and motivation for all people to contribute," said Mr. Dang Ha Viet.
Previously, after reporting on the issue of having to divide medal bonuses, bonus money and pay into a "strange fund", athlete Pham Nhu Phuong accused the two head coaches of the national gymnastics team of clocking in on the athletes' days off (Saturday and Sunday) even though they did not practice. It is worth mentioning that the athletes still receive training money but have to deduct half of it for the coaches to pay into the team fund.
Nhu Phuong did not change her decision to retire.
In a coach's explanation, the money that athlete Nhu Phuong contributed to the fund was to serve the team's common purposes, specifically visiting sick family members, birthdays, parties, funerals and many other expenses.
For now, the Department of Sports and Physical Training requires the Gymnastics team as well as other teams to immediately cancel their own funds (if any), and not to force athletes to pay money for any reason. The Department of Sports and Physical Training also tried to persuade athlete Nhu Phuong to continue to stay and train, compete and contribute to Vietnamese sports, but this athlete refused, determined to retire at the age of 20.
