Open up great opportunities

The cultural industry is the bridge between tradition and modernity, between our ancestors' heritage and contemporary life. When Vietnamese cultural products such as movies, music, fashion or tourism are loved globally, it is not only an economic achievement but also a way for the world to better understand the soul of the Vietnamese people. Unique cultural values such as ao dai, Dong Ho, Hang Trong, Lang Sinh folk paintings, or the arts of tuong, cheo, and cai luong no longer exist only in books or museums, but are vividly recreated, creatively and commercialized to reach far.

In the context of globalization, developing the cultural industry is a way to protect national identity and avoid being dissolved in the flow of “cultural invasion”. At the same time, this is also an opportunity for Vietnam to turn culture into an economic strength, contributing significantly to GDP, creating jobs and promoting innovation.

The greater significance is to arouse national pride, encourage the younger generation to participate in the creative journey, develop new values on the basis of heritage. The cultural industry is the heartbeat of a rising nation, proud of the past and confident towards the future, affirming that Vietnam not only integrates, but also leads and inspires the world.

In 2024, we see the first mark of an increasingly fuller awareness of the position and role of cultural industries in the country's sustainable development. If in the past, culture was often viewed as a non-profit or social sector, cultural products were not commodities, now, with the strong development of cultural industries, especially products such as cinema, music, fashion, cultural tourism, society has gradually realized that culture is not only a tool to preserve traditional values but also an important driving force to promote the economy.

This change comes from specific policies and strategies, especially from the achievements of Resolution 33 of the Party on building and developing Vietnamese culture and people exactly 10 years ago, or the 8-year strategy for developing cultural industries. These policies not only recognize culture as an important part of the national development strategy but also identify the cultural industry as a strategic sector, contributing directly to economic growth and improving people's lives.

In that context, the cultural industry not only helps develop the economy but also creates sustainable values, closely linked to the country's sustainable development goals. Industries such as cinema, music, design, fashion and cultural tourism are currently making significant progress, creating valuable products not only for the domestic market but also for the international market. Major cultural events this year such as the Hanoi International Film Festival, Hanoi Design - Creativity Week with the theme "Creative Crossroads", or even new events such as the first Animation Film Festival have become prominent brands with potential, contributing to enhancing the image of Vietnamese culture in the international arena.

Furthermore, this awareness also promotes creativity in the community. The cultural industry creates many job opportunities, promoting creative startups, especially among young people. Industries such as design, advertising, film production, and fashion not only meet domestic needs but can also reach out to the world. This not only promotes the economy but also helps improve the quality of cultural products, thereby helping to preserve traditional values, while creating new values.

With a fuller awareness of the role of cultural industries, Vietnam is opening up great opportunities for sustainable development in the New Era. Cultural industries not only contribute to economic growth but also preserve and promote national cultural identity, creating a foundation for longer-term and stronger development.

Perfecting the legal corridor

In 2024, the work of perfecting institutions and policies to develop cultural industries in Vietnam has made important progress, clearly demonstrated through the directives of the Party, the National Assembly and the Government. One of the outstanding milestones is the issuance of Directive No. 30/CT-TTg dated August 29, 2024 of the Prime Minister, directing the development of Vietnam's cultural industries. This is an important turning point in promoting cultural industries to become a pillar of the national economy, with the goal of enhancing cultural values, preserving and promoting heritage, and promoting economic development.

This Directive not only demonstrates the Government’s full awareness of the importance of the cultural industry but also serves as a driving force for implementing systematic solutions to create a favorable environment for these industries to develop. In fact, cultural industries have been identified as a strategic sector in socio-economic development, especially when the country is deeply integrating into the global economy.

This policy expands the legal framework, adjusts and completes regulations in areas such as cinema, music, performing arts, cultural tourism, design, handicrafts, publishing and other creative cultural industries. One of the strengths of the directive is the focus on building a support mechanism for businesses and the creative community, to encourage innovation and investment in highly commercial cultural products. This not only helps Vietnamese cultural products access international markets but also creates more job opportunities, increases revenue and increases export value for the country.

In addition, the directive also focuses on developing cultural infrastructure, from creative spaces in large cities to digital technology platforms that support the promotion of cultural products. Tax incentives, capital support, and investment incentives in this field will be important incentives for businesses and cultural organizations to invest in large-scale creative projects. Furthermore, building public-private partnership models between the state, businesses, and the creative community will create comprehensive development solutions for the cultural industry.

In that context, cultural industries are also showing positive signs of international integration. International events such as the Hanoi International Film Festival, the Da Nang Asian Film Festival, art exhibitions, and specialized seminars have expanded the space for international exchange and cooperation, helping Vietnamese cultural products have the opportunity to reach global audiences, thereby building a Vietnamese cultural brand that reaches far and wide.

Overall, the Government’s policy in 2024, especially Directive No. 30, has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing cultural industries, aiming to enhance cultural values in the national economy. This Directive is an important milestone in promoting the sustainable development of Vietnamese culture, preserving national identity and at the same time promoting the creative economy, opening up opportunities for cultural industries to develop strongly and sustainably.

Promote and build national brands

2024 is also a year that marks a strong explosion of cultural and artistic events in Vietnam, creating great imprints in building and promoting brands for cultural industries. These events not only enrich cultural life but also contribute significantly to economic development by attracting the attention of international tourists and the domestic market, promoting related industries such as tourism, cinema, music, and design.

Notably, the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2024 is one of the remarkable events, attracting the participation of international artists, designers and experts. This is not only an opportunity to honor creative works but also affirms the essential role of design in cultural economic development. Exhibitions, seminars and workshops have created a space for creative exchange, helping cultural exchange and promoting the creative industry in Vietnam. The Hanoi International Film Festival 2024 (HANIFF) continues to be a major event, expanding opportunities for Vietnamese cinema to exchange internationally. This is an opportunity for Vietnamese films to be introduced and highly appreciated by experts, while helping Vietnamese films advance to the international market, enhancing the value of domestic and foreign cinema brands. Meanwhile, Hanoi Tourism Welcomes 2024 - Get on Hanoi 2024, Ao Dai Festival, Hanoi Food Festival... not only promote the image of the capital but also promote the cultural tourism industry, with music events, Ao Dai, street festivals and art programs attracting millions of visitors. These events demonstrate the combination of culture and tourism, helping to build a sustainable tourism brand for Vietnam.

In Ho Chi Minh City, along with the excitement of the largest entertainment market in the country, the Ho Chi Minh City River Festival 2024 is also a highlight contributing to honoring the cultural values of the South, especially river culture, and bringing new experiences to visitors. This festival is not only a tourist highlight but also an opportunity to develop cultural industries associated with heritage and the environment.

In other cities such as Nha Trang with film festivals, cultural tourism weeks associated with the sea, or Da Nang with the Da Nang Fireworks Festival, Asian Film Festival, ... along with cultural events in many localities, tourist destinations across the country such as Sa Pa, Da Lat, Hoi An, Hoa Lu, ... become events not to be missed in 2024.

In addition to major events, films by Tran Thanh and Ly Hai with revenue of hundreds of billions of VND in 2024 have become symbols of success of the Vietnamese film industry. These films not only left a strong impression on the audience but also showed the power of Vietnamese cinema in attracting the market and the ability to reach beyond national borders. Meanwhile, many music events such as the music concert Anh trai say hi with the participation of tens of thousands of audiences sold out as soon as they went on sale, demonstrating the strong attraction of music programs in Vietnam. This is a typical event for the development of the Vietnamese music industry, especially when there are famous artists from home and abroad.

All these events not only bring unique cultural experiences to people and tourists but also contribute significantly to building and promoting the national brand, while promoting cultural industries in Vietnam. In 2024, with the explosion of cultural events, Vietnam is affirming its increasingly strong position in the global creative economy.
