The letter sent out, the amount of contributions for this year's school year has not been finalized, but the contribution of 2.5 billion VND to support 100 new students in difficult circumstances has still been determined by the Vinacam Scholarship Fund, thanks to "saving up every year".
Entering the 22nd year of accompanying the program, talking to us at the company office, Mr. Vu Duy Hai seemed to still have the same enthusiasm as the early days when he decided to lend a hand to support new students in difficulty.
Nurturing dreams for poor freshmen
* What goal or number have you set for fundraising for the School Support program this year, sir?
- We don't have any target for the fund, but every year we call for contributions. Some years we get more, some years we get less. The amount depends on the business activities of Vinacam as well as other companies in the industry. When the economy is bad, it is more difficult to call for contributions.
I only set one criterion: this year, I will try to work with Tuoi Tre newspaper to raise a contribution of 2.5 billion. Whatever amount is raised will be contributed to the program, the rest will be covered by Vinacam from the Vinacam Scholarship Fund.
This year may be very difficult, we still wrote a letter calling for donors, also clearly stating in the letter that even though it is difficult, if everyone contributes a little, one more poor student who overcomes difficulties will be supported, and their families will be less poor.
Now I write an open letter without any hesitation, but just clearly state my point of view. Especially when the money that benefactors contribute to the fund for this work, I guarantee that 100% of the money received will be transferred completely to the children, otherwise it will be spent. When attending scholarship awards with the newspaper, all expenses are from the group's expenses.
22 years with School Support

* This is the 22nd year Vinacam has accompanied the School Support Program. What has helped this partnership last so long?
- I joined the School Support Program from its first days in 2003, but initially only as an individual. Then in 2013, the Vinacam Scholarship Fund was established.
This fund was initially established to support the children of thousands of workers in Vinacam Group, and to reward them when they achieve good results or to support families in difficulty.
At that time, I only thought about it, but after doing it, I realized that this could be a channel to call for more scholarships for new students of the "Tiep suc den truong" program, instead of struggling alone for not knowing how many years. Since 2013, Vinacam Scholarship Fund has signed a commitment to accompany Tuoi Tre newspaper.
At that time, I just thought that in the first 5 years, I would try to contribute about 500 million VND each year to the School Support Program, and within 10 years, the fund could reach a balance of 1 million USD.
* Has the goal of 1 million USD been completed yet, sir?
- The good news is that the Vinacam Scholarship Fund has received support not only from within the country but also from many people living abroad. Therefore, the dream of 1 million dollars that I thought would be achieved within 10 years has been achieved very quickly. Up to now, the fund is approximately 3 million USD.
It should also be clarified that in good business years, Vinacam Group transfers a relatively large amount to the scholarship fund as a reserve, and each year it calls for more. If the group does well, it gives more. In difficult years, it takes it from the reserve.
But in general we have to save, we cannot ask for it all at once. There are many situations but we can only take care of the situations that we find most difficult, the most difficult.

* As for you, as chairman of the fund management board, what other thoughts do you have that help you keep the fire burning until today?
- I often attend the scholarship awarding ceremonies of the "Supporting students to go to school" program for students in the northern mountainous region. Whenever I have the opportunity to share with you, I simply say that first of all, we must be literate, otherwise we will not stay in the village anymore. We must have qualifications to be able to apply science and technology to real life. In fact, when you are supported to go to school to study, you have learned a lot of knowledge, been guided by teachers, and shared by society.
For example, in the agricultural sector, today there are many farmers and many farmer families who have become much richer. Somewhere there are friends who have been given the opportunity to go to school, they return with the knowledge they have acquired, know how to fertilize appropriately, know how to sell products online...
Obviously, the results are not only life-changing for your families, but also for the betterment of the whole region. That is what motivates me to do it. I feel passionate about what I do because I see that what I do brings clear benefits to society, society benefits, and your families benefit. I told Tuoi Tre newspaper that as long as I have money and health, I will continue to accompany the program.
Therefore, I hope that new students, no matter how difficult it is, must try to study first, then earn money to supplement their studies. Don't let earning money to supplement your studies become your main goal and neglect your studies.
