The song Battalion 307 is probably not unfamiliar to many people:

Who has ever crossed the Mekong River...

The battle of Thap Muoi and the battle of Moc Hoa were famous with the battle of La Bang.

The Moc Hoa battle mentioned in the song lyrics is the Moc Hoa victory organized by Regiment 120 in coordination with Battalion 307 and local troops and guerrillas to fight the enemy from August 16 to 18, 1948. It was a famous "attacking the fort and attacking the reinforcements" battle, which went down in the heroic history of the army and people of the South during the 9-year resistance war against the French.

The Battle Was Fierce

The Moc Hoa victory stele was built in a spacious manner in Kien Tuong town.

The attack on Moc Hoa fort (Long An province) became famous because it was a glorious victory when we attacked an enemy outpost deep in the Dong Thap Muoi base area, blocking the corridor from the East to the Southwest. Moc Hoa fort was located on Bac Chieng hill, not only convenient for organizing defense and observing from afar but also had a garrison force and was equipped with quite strong weapons (including 1 mercenary company with 1 81 mortar, 2 60 mortars, 2 heavy machine guns, 4 medium machine guns, the rest were submachine guns and rifles,...). In particular, if attacked, Moc Hoa fort was immediately supported by artillery.

Determined to break the enemy's stranglehold on the Vietnam-Cambodia border and expand the Dong Thap Muoi base, opening up the strategic corridor from the East to the Southwest, we agreed on the plan of "attacking the fort, attacking the reinforcements" - using forces to attack the Moc Hoa fort; at the same time, intercepting French reinforcements from the border.

At 10:30 p.m. on August 16, 1948, at the fort attack front, our troops simultaneously attacked Moc Hoa fort, creating a siege around the fort. When the enemy "broke out", they would destroy each small group. At the Kompong-Rou front, Company 931 of Battalion 307 was tasked with blocking the front at Ong Ton fort (Binh Hiep commune). When the enemy entered the ambush, our troops opened fire, killing 23 of them and capturing many of them, including Lieutenant Louis Bertrand, the fort commander.

As a result, after 3 days and nights of fighting, we killed over 100 enemies, wounded dozens, and captured many French soldiers. In addition, we also heavily damaged an enemy battalion, captured over 100 guns of various types, and equipped the troops and guerrillas. After the above victory, in mid-1949, the enemy withdrew from the post. The destruction of Moc Hoa post was a great victory for expanding the revolutionary base of Zone 8 and expanding the area to fight the enemy in the Vietnam - Cambodia border area.

Not only was it a glorious victory, the Moc Hoa battle also left a special mark when it became the first subject to be released in the famous “bung bien cinema” of that time. The battle was filmed directly from the battlefield, considered a miracle of the revolutionary cinema of the bung bien when it was officially released on the night of December 24, 1948 at the banks of the Duong Van Duong canal in the Dong Thap Muoi war zone.
