On August 17, Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee coordinated with the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department to organize a press conference on the results of environmental incident remediation at An Hiep landfill (Ba Tri district).
Polluted areas and rainwater seepage from An Hiep landfill have been covered with plastic tarps.
Mr. Bui Minh Tuan, Director of Ben Tre Department of Natural Resources and Environment , said that after nearly 1 month of focusing on implementing a series of solutions, the pollution spreading from An Hiep landfill has decreased by more than 95% compared to the time when people blocked garbage trucks and did not allow them to dump garbage at this landfill.
Specifically, the landfill cells were covered with tarpaulins to prevent leachate and reduce odors with an area of 20,700 m2 (100%); and the leachate was reinforced to prevent it from escaping into the environment. The leachate was channeled and pumped to a centralized storage area in biological ponds within the landfill area, and was not allowed to be discharged outside without being treated to meet environmental technical standards.

In addition, the authorities regularly clean the surrounding environment, such as: daily spraying of EM biological products and chemicals in the landfill area to treat odors, flies, and insects; supporting regular spraying for households living near the landfill area.
Along with the synchronous implementation of solutions to overcome environmental pollution at An Hiep landfill, Ben Tre province's functional agencies are considering supporting social security policies and health care for people around the landfill.
Currently, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ben Tre is urgently constructing a wastewater treatment system with an expected capacity of 30 m3 /day and night, costing about 4 billion VND, to treat leachate to meet environmental technical standards before discharging it into the outside environment. Expected to be completed within 6 months.
At the same time, speed up the expansion of the landfill area by 3 hectares to increase the capacity to receive and treat waste; create a buffer zone by planting trees to limit the impact of the landfill on the lives of surrounding residents.

In the long term, Ben Tre province is calling for investment in An Hiep Waste Treatment Plant (Ba Tri District) with modern, environmentally friendly treatment technology to ensure the district's waste treatment in the future, limiting negative impacts on the environment and people's health.
Previously, on July 15, some residents of An Hiep and An Duc communes blocked garbage trucks, preventing them from dumping garbage at An Hiep landfill. Since then, garbage trucks have had no place to dump garbage, leading to a large amount of garbage congestion in Ba Tri district, Chau Thanh district and Ben Tre city, affecting people and social safety. After that, Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee had a direct dialogue with local households and promised to overcome the environmental pollution within 1 month.
On July 23, Mr. Nguyen Minh Canh, Vice Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee, signed a document announcing an emergency situation of the environmental incident at An Hiep landfill to facilitate the province in implementing emergency measures to overcome the environmental incident and stabilize the situation for local people.
