The head coach position of Hanoi Police Club is about to welcome a new face, that is Coach Gong Oh-kyun. The former strategist of Vietnam U.23 team signed a 2-year contract with the reigning V-League champion team, thereby taking on the task of leading the team in the V-League and the National Cup 2023-2024.
Hanoi Police Club actually negotiated with coach Gong Oh-kyun before, but only today (October 31) has the agreement on contract term and benefits been finalized.
The Korean strategist is rumored to receive a salary of about 20,000 USD/month, and will coach the Hanoi Police Club for 2 seasons. If the team achieves good results, the two sides can consider extending the contract.
Coach Gong Oh-kyun leads Hanoi Police Club
Coach Gong Oh-kyun is not a stranger to Vietnamese football. He followed coach Shin Tae-yong to Indonesia to work, then switched to coaching U.23 Vietnam to participate in the 2022 AFC U.23 Championship. Although not highly rated, plus the short preparation period, Mr. Gong and U.23 Vietnam played extremely well when holding U.23 Korea to a draw, winning a ticket to the group stage and only stopping before U.23 Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals.
The notable point of the 2022 AFC U23 Championship is that coach Gong Oh-kyun built an attractive and beautiful attacking style of play for Vietnam U23, promoting the progress of many young faces such as Tuan Tai, Van Khang, Van Truong, Van Chuan. After the AFC U23 Championship, Mr. Gong left the team due to not reaching an agreement to extend the contract with the Vietnam Football Federation.
After leaving the U.23 Vietnam team, Mr. Gong Oh-kyun focused on studying for a Pro license and expressed his desire to stay in Vietnam to work. There was information that Coach Gong Oh-kyun was negotiating to lead some V-League teams, but it was just a rumor.
Coach Gong Oh-kyun will start work in early November after his media introduction and contract signing. The Korean coach's task is to help the Hanoi Police Club maintain its position in the championship race.
Since playing in the V-League, Hanoi Police Club has used 3 head coaches, including Paulo Foiani, Flavio Cruz and Tran Tien Dai. No coach has been in office for more than 4 months.
After 2 rounds, Hanoi Police Club is temporarily ranked second in the V-League 2023-2024 table with 4 points. Van Thanh and his teammates drew 1-1 with Binh Dinh Club in the opening round and beat HAGL 3-0 in the second round.
