VFF looking for Japanese coach for U.17 Vietnam, determined to get ticket to World Cup

U.17 Vietnam is about to have a new coach

U.17 Vietnam is the team that will fire the first shot for Vietnamese youth football in 2025, when preparing to enter the final round of the 2025 U.17 Asia. At this playground, U.17 Vietnam is in Group B with U.17 Japan, U.17 Australia and U.17 UAE.

This is a group that is considered difficult for U.17 Vietnam, because U.17 Japan is the reigning champion of the tournament, while the youth teams from Australia and UAE are all top-notch in the region. However, in the youth arena, surprises can happen. In 2016, U.17 Vietnam was also in the same group as U.17 Japan and U.17 Australia, but later won a ticket to the quarterfinals.

U.17 Vietnam will have a new coach

If they repeat their achievement of reaching the quarterfinals in this year’s tournament, U.17 Vietnam will have the first time in history to win a ticket to the U.17 World Cup. Therefore, the preparation work has been carried out by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) from now.

The coaching bench of U.17 Vietnam will change "captain". Initially, coach Cristiano Roland (who has led the team for the past six months) was expected to coach U.17 Vietnam in the 2025 U.17 Asian Cup finals. However, Mr. Roland has just been appointed as the technical director of Da Nang Club, so he will not be in charge of U.17 Vietnam.

According to Thanh Nien Newspaper, VFF is making a list of candidates for the position of head coach of Vietnam U.17. Among them, the most promising candidate is a Japanese strategist, who used to lead the Japan U.16 team and has many years of experience in coaching, teaching football and working for the Japan Football Association (JFA). This candidate is being carefully studied by VFF's professional departments to select for Vietnam U.17.

If the contract is signed, this will be the first time in 9 years that a Vietnamese youth team will be coached by a Japanese strategist. The last time a Japanese coach was involved in Vietnamese youth football was in the period 2014 - 2016, when Mr. Toshiya Miura was also the head coach of the national team, U.23 and Olympic Vietnam.

Coach Roland will not continue with U.17 Vietnam

After Mr. Miura, the head coach position of the Vietnam U.17 and U.20 teams has often been assigned to domestic coaches. Coach Hoang Anh Tuan is the most experienced person with Vietnam's youth teams, and is also the "captain" of the Vietnam U.17 team at the 2025 AFC U.17 Championship finals.

Need to plan soon

The Vietnam U.17 and U.20 teams are considered the cradle of talent for the national team. However, in 2024, the coaching positions of these teams will continuously change hands.

For example, in the Vietnam U.17 team, coach Tran Minh Chien led the players to participate in the Southeast Asian tournament in 2024, but then the person in charge of the 2025 U.17 Asian qualifiers was coach Roland.

Or in the U.20 Vietnam team, Mr. Hua Hien Vinh was the coach in the Southeast Asian tournaments and the Asian qualifiers. After the team stopped in the qualifiers, this seat is currently vacant.

To ensure stability and continuity for the youth teams, VFF needs to appoint long-term coaches with consistent strategies to shape the playing style of the young players. The youth team coach and coach Kim Sang-sik also need to work closely to ensure continuity, helping young talents have a solid foundation for the goal of wearing the Vietnamese national team jersey in the future.
