Dr. Nguyen Thanh Triet, Deputy Head of the Department of Traditional Medicine, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, said that Moringa is a plant native to India. It contains protein, vitamins and minerals, which are very useful in fighting malnutrition. Moringa is an important food source in some parts of the world. It can be grown easily, sold cheaply and still retains much of its nutritional value when dried.

Antioxidant medicinal herbs, support treatment of many diseases

Moringa is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells. It also helps reduce inflammation and pain. In the medicine of some countries, Moringa is also used to support the treatment of asthma, diabetes, increase milk production in breastfeeding women, and for many other purposes such as lowering blood fat, improving menopausal symptoms, treating constipation, kidney stones, cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer...

"Moringa contains a lot of vitamins and vegetable protein, considered the 'poor man's beef'. Moringa leaves and seeds can be safe when used as medicine for a short time," Dr. Triet shared.

Fresh Moringa leaves

According to specialist 2 Huynh Tan Vu, Day Treatment Unit, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, all parts of the Moringa tree such as fruit, young leaves, and flowers can be used as vegetables, but must be cooked. The leaves stimulate digestion, the fruit is spicy, used in curry, and the Moringa seeds are extracted to make cooking oil.

Moringa leaves are rich in nutrients containing many important minerals such as protein, vitamins, beta-carotene, amino acids and many compounds that are difficult to find in other plants such as zeatin, flavonoid compounds... Therefore, today moringa is used in many different ways or to create diverse products such as tea, nutritional drinks, packaged dried moringa leaves...

"In medicine, parts of the moringa tree such as leaves, roots, seeds, bark, fruit and flowers... all contain moringinin which has the effect of stimulating digestion, stimulating heart and circulatory system activity, anti-inflammatory, lowering blood pressure, treating diabetes, protecting the liver...", Dr. Vu shared.

Provides many vitamins and minerals good for children

Doctor Huynh Tan Vu shared that Moringa contains more than 90 nutrients, substances that play an important role in protecting human health.

Moringa powder is extracted from the leaves.

Fresh Moringa is also considered an effective solution for mothers with insufficient milk, malnourished children and weaned children aged 1-3. A child under 3 years old consuming 30g of Moringa leaf powder per day can provide more than 1/3 of the protein requirement, 75% of calcium and more than 1/2 of the iron needed for the body.

For pregnant and lactating mothers, just 100g of fresh moringa leaves per day is enough to supplement calcium, vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, copper, magnesium... for the day.

However, according to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Triet, research data on the safety of Moringa is not yet complete, so in some cases, caution is needed, such as in pregnant women, people with hypothyroidism using levothyroxine, and people taking diabetes medication to avoid drug interactions.
