Rosemary is often used as a spice in cooking. In particular, the composition of rosemary also contains many compounds that are good for health.

Dr. Nguyen Thuy Ngan, from the Vietnam Institute for Research and Development of Traditional Medicine, said that rosemary originated in the Mediterranean region and has been used in cooking and natural medicine for thousands of years. Today, it grows throughout Asia, the Americas and Europe.

Rosemary is commonly used as a culinary spice. It also has many therapeutic and household uses, including herbal teas, scented candles, perfumes, and hair care products.

This herb has a strong aroma and flavor and is rich in antioxidants, volatile oils, and other compounds. The flavor of rosemary is described as warm and slightly bitter.

It is in the same plant family as mint (the Lamiaceae, which includes over 7,000 species), but does not have the distinct minty flavor. Rosemary is also a source of concentrated rosemary essential oil, which is used to help relieve conditions including pain, inflammation, upset stomach, anxiety, and respiratory problems.

According to Dr. Ngan, in addition to its aromatic and pleasant taste, this herb is also a source of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds as well as essential nutrients including iron, calcium and vitamins A, C, B6. Some of the benefits of rosemary include:

Provides antioxidants

Because of its rich supply of antioxidants and bioactive chemicals (including phenolic diterpenes), taking rosemary may help combat oxidative stress and support the immune system. It is also known to promote healthy circulation and fight inflammation.

Another way rosemary's antioxidants may be beneficial is its ability to boost skin health by fighting free radical damage that leads to signs of aging.

May help elevate mood and increase alertness

Like several other herbs in the mint family, rosemary is considered a “cognitive stimulant” and can help us feel more alert and focused.

Some studies have also shown that compounds in rosemary essential oil have neuroprotective effects and the ability to improve memory and cognitive performance by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, a brain chemical that contributes to increased concentration and memory retention.

Additionally, the uplifting and energizing scent of rosemary has been linked to improved mood, reduced sleepiness, and reduced stress levels, including due to its ability to reduce the release of the “stress hormone” cortisol.

May help stimulate hair growth

Rosemary (often in the form of rosemary oil) is found in some hair care products to help promote hair growth and a healthy scalp, as it can combat dandruff and dry skin irritation.

It may also reduce the effects of testosterone on hair follicles, which can lead to hair loss and baldness/thinning.

Helps relieve indigestion

This herb, whether cooked or steeped in herbal tea, has long been a natural remedy for digestive problems, including loss of appetite, heartburn, acid reflux, gas, bloating, and abdominal pain.

It appears to have the ability to stimulate the release of digestive fluids including bile, which aids digestion and may aid in normal nutrient absorption.

Has natural antibacterial properties

Rosemary contains compounds that may help fight the growth of certain harmful bacteria, including those that contribute to infections.

Rosemary extracts are even used as food preservatives in some cases because they can help prevent bacteria growth.

Rosemary also acts as a natural insect repellent and may help prevent some insect bites, including ticks and other bugs that can spread diseases and viruses.

May help boost metabolism

Rosemary has been linked to metabolic benefits including helping to treat high blood sugar and poor insulin sensitivity. While it may not be enough to prevent diabetes, it is recommended for those looking to improve high blood sugar.

What to note when using rosemary?

Dr. Ngan notes that when rosemary is used in normal amounts in cooking or as a food additive, it is generally considered safe.

When consumed in large amounts, especially as an essential oil or extract, it may cause some side effects, such as stomach upset, vomiting, spasms, or changes in blood pressure, although these reactions are rare.

Rosemary essential oil has been recognized as safe by the FDA for use as a food additive. Rosemary extract has been used in the food industry for over 20 years as both a flavoring and preservative, but some people may have an allergic reaction to rosemary in rare cases.

If you are allergic to other herbs in the mint family, avoid rosemary and be careful when applying products containing rosemary essential oil.

Rosemary has the potential to alter urination, blood clotting, and blood pressure levels, which means it can interact with certain medications and should be avoided in these cases.

Consult your doctor before adding large amounts of rosemary or this essential oil to your diet if you are taking these medications: anticoagulants/blood thinners; ACE inhibitors for high blood pressure; diuretics; lithium used to treat mental health disorders.
