Speaking to CAND Newspaper, Director of Bac Ninh Museum and Tourism Promotion Nguyen Huu Mao said that experts are currently in the process of analyzing, researching, and handling techniques at the scene. The locality has invited many experts but up to now, they have not yet determined the exact age, what this boat was used for, is this a combined boat or just two boats anchored? Was the location where the boat was discovered a production workshop or a normal trading space?

According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Mao, currently, in addition to the two boats, the authorities have not yet collected any accompanying artifacts. For now, the basic information is that the two boats are both 16.2m long, with one boat being 1.95m wide and the other 2.05m wide. Inside the boat there are 6 compartments with different depths, the deepest compartment is 1.5m. The location of the two boats is in the ancient Dau River. This is the river associated with the ancient Luy Lau citadel, 1km away from Luy Lau citadel as the crow flies.

The initial assessment of archaeological experts is that these could be two cargo boats on the Dau River, permanently connected together. This is a unique discovery, with a strange structure with a solid structure that can withstand force and water well. However, whether these two boats are related to Luy Lau ancient citadel or not, we still have to wait for the results of the appraisal and determination of the age of the artifacts. After completing the excavation, Bac Ninh will continue to invite experts to hold seminars, evaluate and clarify related information before having a plan for the next implementation of these two boats.

“Up to now, all ancient boats discovered in Bac Ninh have been dugout canoes. The boats in Bac Ninh used in recent decades have structures that are different from the two boats discovered this time. The results of the current search also show that currently in Vietnam, there are no boats similar to this type of boat,” Mr. Nguyen Huu Mao added.

It is known that previously, during the process of land reclamation and digging ponds to raise fish, people discovered ancient boat relics on the Dau River. This is a branch of the Thien Duc River - Duong River, close to the western bank of the Luy Lau Citadel. Currently, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Ninh province is coordinating with the Institute of Archaeology under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences to conduct an emergency excavation. The excavation was carried out from March 3 to April 3 on an area of 300 square meters.
