The Department of Construction of Da Nang City has just issued a report proposing a plan to build a tunnel under the Han River and a traffic connection route in the East-West direction through Da Nang airport.
Accordingly, for the East-West traffic connection project through Da Nang International Airport, the Department of Construction proposed a tunnel route with a length of more than 2.9km, including two open tunnel sections with a total length of 570m, three box tunnel sections with a total length of 1,450m and a tunnel through the existing runway of 900m.

There are two proposed options. Option 1 is a subway line (MRT) that runs alongside the road. Option 2 is an MRT line that does not run alongside the road.
According to the analysis, option 1 has high technical difficulty, cost about 10,000 billion VND, average safety/operation level, difficulty in expanding MRT, high level of suitability for Da Nang airport infrastructure. Meanwhile, option 2 has lower technical difficulty, cost about 7,500 billion VND, high safety/operation level, easy to expand MRT, average level of suitability for Da Nang airport infrastructure.
The Da Nang Department of Construction recommends that for the tunnel route through the airport, it is not advisable to combine the MRT route and the road route. The reason is that the technical standards of the MRT and the road are different. The characteristics of the plane and longitudinal profile of the MRT route and the road at the tunnel route through the airport are too different, making it difficult to handle the structure at the changeover point between the MRT and the road.
According to the Department, the investment progress of the MRT line has not yet been determined, so with rapid changes in technology, the determination of the route and technology will be selected at the time of investment. However, with the actual conditions of Da Nang airport being planned for expansion, the MRT line option also needs to be studied soon.
For the Han River tunnel project, the total length of the main tunnel is about 1.67km; including a 600m closed tunnel across the river, a 380m closed tunnel on the bank and a 415m open tunnel. The starting point of the tunnel connects to Dong Da Street (Hai Chau District), the end point connects to Van Don Street (Son Tra District). According to the report, the total investment of the project is expected to be 6,880 billion VND. Of which, the construction cost accounts for 3,900 billion VND, the cost of supporting site clearance and resettlement for 2,000 billion VND and some other costs.
