There are still a few days left until the New Year, but the Tet shopping atmosphere in Can Tho City is still quite quiet. Many Tet flower traders lamented: "Another year of slow sales."
Recorded on the afternoon of December 28 at the spring flower market on Tran Van Hoai Street, Ninh Kieu District, one of the long-standing and bustling Tet flower selling spots in Tay Do. The route is about 1km long with dozens of lots and stalls selling all kinds of flowers typical of Tet such as chrysanthemums, marigolds, cockscombs, sunflowers... According to the survey, this year, the number of ornamental flowers and rental lots have decreased.
Colorful, eye-catching flowers are displayed on the sidewalk but there are few buyers.
Mr. Phan Minh Bao Long (owner of 2 flower lots at the beginning of Tran Van Hoai Street) said that on December 19, he brought flowers to the street, selling about 5-10 pairs of flowers each day. From the 26th to the 28th of Tet, he sold about 70 pairs of flowers each day. This year's purchasing power decreased by nearly half compared to last year.
"This year the weather is hot, flowers are harder to grow, and the price of fertilizers and materials has increased input costs. However, we are trying to stabilize the selling price to suit consumers' budgets," Mr. Long added.
At Mr. Long's lot, French marigolds cost 250,000 VND/pair; tall or large marigolds range from 340,000-380,000 VND/pair; Taiwanese chrysanthemums range from 250,000 to 350,000 VND/pair.
Business is difficult, many small traders do not hesitate to list flower prices but are still "ignored" by customers.
On Nguyen Van Cu Street, in addition to chrysanthemums and marigolds, on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2024, some gardeners and traders also display unique ornamental flowers such as bonsai dragons made of paper flowers.
Mr. Nguyen Bay Den (living in Ben Tre province) is the owner of the above paper flowers. He shared that every year he sells paper flowers at the flower market in Ho Chi Minh City, but he is afraid of competition, so this Tet 2024 he sells in Can Tho.
"I brought 4 pots of dragon bougainvillea and about 50 bonsai pots of normal bougainvillea. The dragon bougainvillea costs 3 million VND/pot. It has been on sale for over a week now, and some customers have asked to buy it, but probably because of the price, no one has decided yet," Mr. Bay Den lamented.
