Check-in on mountain passes: Planning to build stops for sightseeing and taking photos

After publishing the series of articles “Check-in on mountain passes”, SGGP Newspaper received feedback from localities where mountain passes pass, as well as opinions from experts to propose solutions and suggestions to contribute to exploiting the “specialty” of Vietnamese mountain passes to become a safe and attractive destination for domestic tourists, as well as promoting the natural beauty of Vietnam to the world.

Mr. NGUYEN HAI QUYNH, Chairman of Community Tourism Association:

Mountain passes have a special appeal to tourists, but there are also concerns about traffic safety and the safety of tourists' travel experiences when visiting the Northwest routes and spontaneous check-in points. The spontaneous creation of check-in points by local people not only poses risks to tourists but also affects the natural landscape and surrounding environment. The government needs to have specific planning as well as intervention to control the development of check-in points on mountain passes.

It is necessary to build professional tourism infrastructure, so that it can both earn money from this service and ensure the safety of tourists and traffic, and protect natural resources. It is necessary to strengthen tourism promotion and management through close cooperation between local authorities, tourism businesses and local communities. This means creating sustainable business opportunities and increasing income for local people, contributing to the protection of natural landscapes and the development of safe and sustainable tourism. In addition to warnings, there must also be strict penalties to prevent dangerous behavior for oneself and the community.

Mr. NGUYEN NGOC PHUC, Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee:

Prenn Pass is completed with 4 lanes (twice as wide as the old pass) contributing to reducing traffic congestion and the risk of traffic accidents. To facilitate people to enjoy the scenery, the locality has built stops and lookouts, thereby creating a highlight for tourists visiting Da Lat to admire the beautiful road with pine forest scenery along the route. Right from the time of upgrading Prenn Pass, Lam Dong province has had a policy of arranging 4 stops and 2 lookouts along the pass, so that tourists can rest assured to stop and enjoy the scenery. The stops are arranged evenly along the pass, and can also be used in emergency situations when there is an incident.

Ms. TRIEU THI TINH, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ha Giang:

Currently, some scenic spots have been planned to build rest stops and sightseeing spots, but occasionally there are still cases of recklessly stopping and parking in the middle of the road, causing passing vehicles to turn sharply and brake to make way for the crowd. Currently, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ha Giang has issued a document requesting a review, developing a plan to ensure safety, placing warning signs, and installing barriers at some dangerous check-in points. Specifically, in May 2023, after receiving information about a dangerous check-in point at a house in Ma Pi Leng B village under Ma Pi Leng pass, the Pa Vi commune government (Meo Vac, Ha Giang) also propagated for tourists not to go to this area to take photos, and at the same time requested the installation of danger warning signs.

Recently, many cement railings along the steep mountain passes in the rocky plateau have been erected to ensure traffic safety, and to warn and prevent tourists from climbing onto cliffs to take photos. Local authorities also regularly promote and advise tourists to avoid stopping to take photos in unsafe places. Currently, points on mountain passes such as Tham Ma slope, 9-turn slope, or roads along Ma Pi Leng route have been included in the planning to guide the construction of scenic stops.

Mr. TRAN DUY HUNG, Head of Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Bac Binh district (Binh Thuan):

To put an end to the situation of people encroaching and illegally constructing works on National Highway 28B, the District People's Committee has just established a working group to inspect, thoroughly handle, and hand over the site to prepare for the project of upgrading and renovating this route. In order to meet the needs of resting and sightseeing of people and tourists traveling on National Highway 28B, the Bac Binh District People's Committee has also proposed to the Binh Thuan Provincial People's Committee and the Ministry of Transport to include 4 locations in the land use planning for production and business, then organize auctions for lease to build rest stops in a systematic, orderly manner, ensuring safety. It is expected that in 2024, the rest stops will be built, thereby ending the complicated situation of land encroachment occurring on this route, contributing to tourism development and contributing to the local budget.
