13 years ago, when he started his mai business, Mr. Thiet only had passion and self-accumulated knowledge. When he opened the Thiet mai tu quy shop, he mainly traded bo (cutting branches), rented mai during Tet and took care of mai for small-scale customers. "At first, I only had 2,000m² of land to do business, gradually expanding to about 7,000m² of land and investing in an automatic irrigation system to save time and effort" - Mr. Thiet shared.
Mr. Tran Huu Thiet (Tan An City) trims mai leaves, preparing for the new mai crop.
In the early days of starting his business , he encountered many difficulties because he had previously specialized in growing frangipani. "Initially, I lacked experience in the process of releasing embryos (seedlings) because the seedlings were weak or sick, leading to a lot of loss" - Mr. Thiet recalled. With a capital of 30-40 million VND, Mr. Thiet learned how to manage cash flow, invested in quality seedlings and gradually built up the business he has today.
The special thing in his garden is the super flower Thiet Mai Long An that he crossbred himself. Using the technique of grafting yellow apricot onto the root of the four-season apricot tree, he produces a product of beautiful, evenly blooming apricot flowers, 8-10cm in size, bright yellow in color and with a characteristic fragrance.
Referring to the technique of caring for this type of apricot, Mr. Thiet said: "The process of growing the super-flower Thiet apricot includes the following steps: releasing the embryo; cutting and adjusting the roots; mixing the growing medium made from peanut shells, rice husk ash, and coconut peat to ensure the soil is loose and airy; pressing the growing medium tightly into the pot; grafting;... In addition, the weather is a factor that greatly affects the care of apricot. I have to regularly monitor and learn from previous years to adjust the appropriate techniques."
In addition to the super Thiet Mai flower, Mr. Thiet's garden also has many other varieties of mai such as Thu Duc mai, Tan Chau mai, gai mai, Tho Huong chrysanthemum, twisted mai, bi chrysanthemum,...
Currently, his average annual income ranges from 300-500 million VND after deducting expenses and labor. "Currently, I do business in services such as selling, renting and taking care of apricot trees. The price of apricot trees ranges from 2-300 million VND; the rental price is about 500,000-10 million VND depending on the type of tree; the price of taking care of apricot trees is about 5-10 million VND/tree/year" - Mr. Thiet added.
Not only successful in business, Mr. Thiet actively shares knowledge and experience on the YouTube channel Thiet Mai Tu Quy. In addition, he was also recognized as the Ornamental Artist in 2024, taking on the role of Vice President of the Ornamental Plants Association of Tan An City, term 2025-2030.
In the future, Mr. Thiet plans to rearrange the apricot garden, develop the apricot rental and care sector. "I want to spread the love of ornamental plants to more people, especially the younger generation. The apricot tree is not only a beautiful ornamental plant but also has cultural significance, especially during Tet, when the apricot blossoms bloom as a symbol of a prosperous and peaceful new year," Mr. Thiet shared.
The story of Mr. Tran Huu Thiet is a testament to passion, perseverance and the spirit of continuous learning to reach the dream of a successful startup./.
