Barnes, who graduated two years early with a 4.98 GPA, has said he wants to pursue computer science and then law. He started applying to schools in August 2022 and said he didn’t initially intend to set any records.
On Friday, Barnes said he always knew what he wanted to do from a young age and chose Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, because it was “the best for engineering.” He said he wanted to attend a school that would “help me succeed, give me a quality education.”
When asked what he hopes to gain from his college experience, Barnes said he hopes to meet new people and “gain a different understanding and perspective of the world, to have my eyes opened and my perception changed by the people around me for the better.”
Barnes has earned 27 college credits in the past two years. He credits his family for his success and says he looks to former President Barack Obama and TV host Oprah Winfrey, both of whom he admires, for advice.
