Vietnam's best futsal player reveals reason for retirement

Tran Van Vu is one of the best players of Vietnamese futsal in general and the Vietnamese futsal team in particular. Throughout his career, the striker born in 1990 has been with Thai Son Nam futsal club for 15 years. He also has 14 years of dedication at the national team level, playing 78 matches and contributing 43 goals.

Tran Van Vu confided: “I was really sad and thought a lot before making this decision. But I think this is the time for me to stop to create opportunities for young players to develop.”

Tran Van Vu (11) has 14 years wearing the Vietnamese futsal team jersey.

While still playing, Tran Van Vu won the Golden Ball of Vietnam Futsal twice. He participated in the Futsal World Cup twice with the Vietnam Futsal team. In addition, Van Vu also won many championships for Thai Son Nam Club and other individual titles.

The 33-year-old striker recalled unforgettable memories of his career as a player: "In the national team, my most memorable memory was when the Vietnamese futsal team won against Japan and got a ticket to the World Cup - a ticket for the first time in the history of Vietnamese football. As for the club, what I remember most was when Thai Son Nam won the international bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Club Championship in Iran."

After 15 years as a player, Van Vu will continue to work with Thai Son Nam futsal club as a coach.

Tran Van Vu retired but did not stop with football. He will continue to pursue his passion for the round ball in a new position, becoming a member of the coaching staff of Thai Son Nam futsal club. “I was also lucky to work with many foreign coaches and learned a lot of valuable experiences. I hope to promote those experiences, to be able to pass them on to the players to become more and more perfect,” said Tran Van Vu.

When retiring, the 33-year-old striker hopes that Vietnamese futsal will develop further in the future: “Currently, the club's youth teams are being invested in more systematically, training from basic specialized futsal. They have very good skills and tactical thinking. Hopefully in the future, they will be able to develop their full potential as Vietnamese people. As for the national team, the force is being rejuvenated with the experienced coaching of Mr. Diego. I have high expectations and believe that the Vietnamese futsal team will participate in the next futsal World Cup.”
