“After careful consideration, I decided to temporarily stop playing professional tennis and focus on pickleball,” Ly Hoang Nam told the media at an event in Hanoi this morning.

Hoang Nam’s temporary retirement is a big loss for domestic tennis because he has been the number one tennis player in Vietnam for many years. However, in the past few years, Hoang Nam has not been able to maintain his momentum in his favorite sport. Before Nam, many tennis players have also “fallen in love” with pickleball.
Nam has not said he is retiring from professional tennis, but his actions over the past six months have shown that he is gradually thinking about it. The fact that Nam has not officially announced his retirement could imply that he is still leaving himself the option to return when things are going well.
Hoang Nam said he initially only tried out pickleball. But then, the 1997-born player was impressed and decided to compete more in world pickleball tournaments.
Hoang Nam said: “I am focusing on domestic tournaments for now. With the current development of pickleball, we have and will continue to attract many of the world's top athletes. This is an opportunity for me to learn and gain experience. After that, I will step out to test my strength in Asia. If I can compete, I will continue to test my strength in other arenas such as the US and Europe.”
Ly Hoang Nam was born in 1997, from Tay Ninh. He grew up in the youth tennis system of Binh Duong. In 2013, Hoang Nam won the gold medal at the 2013 Asian Youth Games in Nanjing (China). In 2019 and 2021, he consecutively won the SEA Games gold medal in the men's singles event.
The pinnacle of Hoang Nam's career was the Wimbledon junior championship in men's doubles, paired with Sumit Nagal (India). Nam's highest ranking on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings was 231 in 2022.
Hoang Nam once reached the third round of Roland Garros in the junior tournament. He has never played in the official rounds of the four major Grand Slam tournaments. However, he has been the number one tennis player in Vietnam for many years.
