On the morning of March 19, tennis player Phuc Huynh said he had just read some content on social media, the pickleball group said that he was not qualified to participate in the National Pickleball Championship.
Specifically, many people believe that Phuc Huynh was born in Vietnam but moved to the US at the age of 3, so it is difficult for him to have Vietnamese citizenship.
From that, some people concluded that Phuc Huynh did not meet the athlete qualifications to participate in the 2025 National Championship, even though he won the men's singles championship.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Phuc Huynh said: "I don't understand where people get their information. When I participated in the national pickleball tournament, I showed the organizers my passport."
Phuc Huynh has had a Vietnamese passport since 2022. His passport was made in Washington DC and has an expiration date of June 2032. Therefore, he is eligible to compete in the 2025 National Pickleball Championship.
According to research, the time this tennis player born in 2000 got a Vietnamese passport was when he wanted to return to compete for the Vietnamese tennis team, after a long time living and studying in the US.
Although not yet famous for tennis, Huynh Thien Phuc has become a prominent name in pickleball, when he won the 2024 Asian Open Pickleball Championship in Vietnam.
At the 2025 National Pickleball Championship, Phuc Huynh won the men's singles under 35 years old. In addition, he also won the runner-up position in the men's doubles under 35 years old when he lost to Ly Hoang Nam - Linh Giang.
