Construction sand prices increase, supply shortage forecast

Việt NamViệt Nam20/03/2025

Since the beginning of January 2025, construction sand supplied to the Da Nang market has increased in price and is about to become scarce due to the limited amount of sand brought back for replenishment.

According to records, from mid-February 2025 to present, the price of construction sand sold by small construction material stores in Da Nang city has increased by 20-40% compared to the end of 2024. A construction material dealer in An Hai Bac ward (Son Tra district) said that compared to the end of 2024, in the past month, the price of construction sand transported by ox cart (improved cart) has increased from 150,000-160,000 VND/cart to 180,000-200,000 VND/cart.

A private construction contractor in Nai Hien Dong ward (Son Tra district) shared that the price of construction sand transported by 2-cubic-meter ( m3 ) trucks has increased from VND900,000-950,000/truck to VND1.1-1.2 million/truck. As for plastering sand (fine sand for wall plastering), in the past month, there has been no purchase, forcing contractors to sift to select fine sand from the purchased construction sand.

Surveyed at some sand dealers in Cam Le, Ngu Hanh Son, Hoa Vang districts (purchased directly from sand mines in Quang Nam province), the wholesale price of construction sand at the yard is from 400,000-420,000 VND/ m3 , an increase of 5-10% compared to the end of 2024 and without invoices, while goods with invoices are very few and the price is higher. Customers who come to buy must bring their own dump trucks to transport sand. The reason for the increase in sand prices is that the amount of sand purchased has decreased sharply, while trucks have to wait in line from dawn to dusk to enter the yard to get sand, causing fuel and labor costs to increase, etc.

A sand selling site owner in Ngu Hanh Son district informed that in the past, there were 3 sand mines on Vu Gia and Thu Bon rivers, now there is only one sand mine in operation. Many customers who are private construction material dealers and large contractors constructing works and projects in Hue city, Da Nang and Quang Nam province all bring their vehicles to line up at the operating mine to wait to get sand. However, this site cannot meet such a large demand for sand, so it balances a little for each customer.

A sand yard owner in Hoa Vang district also complained that in the past, he could transport 3-5 trucks of sand every day, but now he has to take the trucks to Dai Loc district (Quang Nam province) to queue from 3am to afternoon to get 1 truck of sand, and the mine owner only allows each agent to get 1-2 trucks of sand every day because there are too many trucks lining up on the road. In the past, when there were few trucks coming to get sand, they could choose between construction sand (coarse grain), plastering sand (fine grain)..., but now, because there are too many trucks lining up, they can quickly get it and then leave, freeing up the road, and they cannot choose the type of sand to buy.

According to construction material dealers, a shortage of construction sand is imminent in Da Nang city because it is the construction season, the amount of sand stored since the rainy season of 2024 has decreased a lot, while the amount of sand purchased to supplement the landfill is too little. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham, owner of a construction material dealer in Hoa Vang district, expressed: “A difficulty for Da Nang city is that there is no construction sand mine, so it has to depend on Quang Nam province.

Currently, the city is in the construction season, the price of construction sand is high, so contractors and people can "endure", but if there is a shortage of construction sand in the near future, many projects will be affected in terms of construction progress. Construction sand is an important commodity, so the authorities need to have proactive solutions to balance and stabilize the supply of construction sand to help people and businesses overcome difficulties.

The increase in construction sand prices has also caused difficulties for some contractors constructing public investment projects in Da Nang city. A contractor shared that currently, construction sand is very necessary for projects in the area. Contractors must have good relationships with dealers to be supplied with sand to meet construction progress. Currently, although they can buy sand, contractors have to pay a price 30% higher than the price of construction materials announced by state management agencies...

Deputy Director of the Department of Construction Vo Tan Ha said that the department does not announce the price of construction sand because there are no sand mines in the city, so it is contacting project management boards to grasp the situation related to construction sand.
