Reuters news agency quoted the PCO's announcement as stating: "The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) office in Manila has received an official arrest warrant from the ICC."
The arrest took place on the morning of March 11 local time, shortly after Mr. Rodrigo Duterte landed at an airport in the capital Manila. The former leader is currently in custody.
The Philippine presidential palace said the country's police executed an arrest warrant issued by the ICC against Mr. Duterte in connection with his controversial policy in the war on drugs while in office, which has left thousands of people dead.
Mr Duterte's former lawyer said the arrest warrant was "illegal" and the former president had no legal representation at the time of his arrest.
Mr. Duterte returned to the Philippines from Hong Kong (China) on March 11. Previously, on March 10, he announced his willingness to accept arrest if the ICC issued a warrant. However, according to information from the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at that time, the Philippines had not yet received an official notice from Interpol about the arrest warrant.
Speaking to the press on March 10, Philippine Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro emphasized: "Our law enforcement agencies are ready to comply with regulations, if an arrest warrant needs to be executed upon request from Interpol."
The PCO assured the public that Mr. Duterte and his team are still healthy and are being monitored by government doctors.
