Warning of increased child injuries during summer

Báo Ninh BìnhBáo Ninh Bình24/06/2023

According to reports from medical facilities, since the summer break, the number of children who have had accidents and injuries requiring hospitalization has increased. Doctors recommend that if children are detected, given timely and proper first aid and taken immediately to a medical facility for examination and proper treatment, their chances of recovery will be much higher.

At the Department of Surgery, Provincial Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, every summer vacation, the number of accidents increases with many types of accidents, the most common of which are traffic accidents, dog bites, broken arms, legs, and burns from hot water, hot food...

Patient Nguyen Thi KH, 14 years old, Kim Chinh commune (Kim Son district) was admitted to the emergency room with facial trauma, fracture of the left maxillary sinus and grade 2 liver injury due to a traffic accident. KH's mother said that her daughter was riding an electric bike at noon, hit an electric pole on the side of the road and fell. KH did not remember clearly why she fell, only vaguely remembered that she went to a friend's house to play, played games, then sat in a cool air-conditioned room, then rode home when the incident happened. Doctors said that the patient was playing around and sweating, then sat in a cold air-conditioned room, then went out in the sun and encountered the temperature difference and became dizzy, lost control of the steering wheel and fell...

Therefore, parents need to pay attention to their children, especially in the summer, when the weather is hot and the outdoor temperature is high. Children should not be allowed to play in the sun, bathe in ponds, dams, rivers, lakes, etc., as they can easily experience symptoms such as heat shock, sunstroke, heatstroke, dizziness, etc.

Another traffic accident caused by the subjectivity of adults towards their children is very dangerous and regrettable. That is the case of a 6-year-old boy carrying his 13-year-old sister on an electric bike to participate in traffic. Due to his young age, he could not control the vehicle and the accident occurred, causing the sister to have a broken femur, the brother to have a torn tendon in his foot, had to have surgery to reconnect the tendon, and had to receive long-term treatment at the Provincial Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital.

Ms. Dinh Thi H., Gia Minh commune (Gia Vien district) took care of her 5-year-old son who was burned by hot water for dozens of days at the provincial Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital. She said: During the summer vacation, my son was playing with his grandmother at home when he accidentally slipped and fell and got burned by boiling water all over his back and shoulders. He was hospitalized for nearly ten days, and although the wound has improved, he is still in a lot of pain, has a poor appetite, and does not know when he will be discharged. Doctors said that boiling water burns are very complicated and painful. Depending on whether the wound is shallow or deep, the treatment time will be long or short. It is very important to be patient and maintain hygiene until the wound heals and new skin forms...

Statistics from medical facilities show that every year during the summer, hospitals receive more cases of children hospitalized due to domestic accidents, traffic accidents, with different levels. Because during the summer vacation, children often play freely, without adult supervision. Children from 2 to 5 years old often have accidents and injuries such as: burns, choking on foreign objects, falling, crushing hands and feet on doors, stairs... As for children from 6 to 15 years old, they often have traffic accidents, drowning, electric shock, broken arms and legs...

Accidents and injuries in children are one of the leading causes of death and lifelong disability for children. There have been cases where families did not know how to provide first aid, causing infection when taking the child to the hospital, making the child's injuries worse, making treatment more difficult and prolonged, leaving long-term, even lifelong, consequences for the child.

According to the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, every year in the province, about 1,000 children between the ages of 1 and under 18 suffer from accidents and injuries, the most common of which are drowning, traffic accidents, dog bites; followed by burns of all kinds, injuries from playing, slipping and falling, injuries from sharp objects, choking, etc.

From the beginning of 2023 until now, according to incomplete statistics, hundreds of children in the province have had accidents and injuries, including dozens of deaths and most of them are deaths due to drowning and traffic accidents.

Doctor Tran Van Toan, Department of Surgery, Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said: Accidents and injuries are very likely to happen to children because of their hyperactivity and curiosity, but they do not have the knowledge and skills to prevent them. Since the summer vacation, the number of accidents and injuries has increased by about 20%; of which about 50% of children are injured due to traffic accidents, domestic accidents such as dog bites, burns, falls, etc., of which, traffic accidents account for the most.

There are many causes of accidents and injuries in children, but the root cause is the carelessness and subjectivity of adults. Therefore, to minimize accidents and injuries to children in the summer, the most important thing is that adults should spend time caring for, looking after, and managing their children and grandchildren, ensuring their absolute safety. Children need to participate in learning and teaching them how to recognize and prevent common and easily occurring accidents in life to prevent...

At the same time, parents and adults also need to learn to grasp the skills of handling injuries and first aid when children have accidents. There should be more healthy and safe places for children to play and entertain, limiting unfortunate accidents that may occur.

In particular, when children are unfortunately injured in an accident, they should be taken immediately to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment. They should not self-treat with folk methods, which can leave unfortunate consequences for them.
