Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs stressed that greenhouse gas emissions in Southeast Asia need to be reduced by 10-25% by 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said ASEAN countries are working towards the goal of becoming an environmentally friendly economic region.
Speaking at the ASEAN Climate Forum 2023 in Jakarta on September 2, Minister Airlangga shared: "The ASEAN Climate Forum highlights the importance of the sustainable development agenda to facilitate ASEAN's transition to an environmentally friendly economy , in line with ASEAN's vision to 2045."
The forum is expected to focus on strategic ideas and holistic thinking on emissions reduction, sustainable energy transition, carbon neutral strategies and sustainable finance.
According to Minister Airlangga, Southeast Asia will suffer the negative impacts of climate change and risk losing about 30% of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 2050 due to rising global temperatures and extreme weather events.
Therefore, greenhouse gas emissions in Southeast Asia need to be reduced by 10-25% by 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
To achieve this goal, government-regional cooperation policy is needed. Many ASEAN sectors have already committed to achieving zero emissions. The use of electric vehicles and renewable energy will also be important for the region to meet its carbon neutrality commitments.
According to Minister Airlangga, ASEAN countries have agreed to develop an electric vehicle ecosystem and become an important part of the global supply chain.
In addition, the development trend of electric vehicles can play an important role in environmental sustainability, starting with efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, accelerate the energy transition, decarbonize the road transport sector to achieve zero emissions targets and enhance energy security in the ASEAN region.
He said the trend of switching to electric vehicles is important not only for ASEAN, but also at the global level due to the advantages of this type of vehicle in the process of energy diversification and emission reduction.
In addition, the ASEAN Summit also agreed to seek cooperation and collaboration in the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem.
The cooperation orientation includes improving infrastructure and charging stations, creating a favorable business and investment environment to attract investment and encouraging public-private partnerships.
Minister Airlangga emphasized that this orientation needs to be implemented through measures to optimize production and sustainable use of raw materials and resources to achieve higher value from the electric vehicle supply chain in the region and promote the participation of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs)./.
