Scientists find the best time to watch TV for health

New research just published in the American Heart Association's journal JAHA, has found the best time to watch TV for health.

Watching TV is a daily sedentary behavior that increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries, leading to conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and peripheral artery disease.

So, researchers at the University of Cambridge (UK) and the University of Hong Kong (China) wanted to find out the impact of watching TV on the risk of cardiovascular disease, especially in people with a genetic predisposition to diabetes - who are at higher risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

They examined data from 346,916 participants, with an average age of 56, from the UK Biobank .

During nearly 14 years of follow-up, 21,265 people developed cardiovascular disease. The authors also calculated the participants’ genetic risk of diabetes and divided them into three categories: low, medium, and high.

For TV viewing time, participants were divided into two groups:

Group 1: Watch TV 1 hour or less per day. Group 2: Watch TV 2 hours or more per day.

Approximately 21% of participants were in group 1 and 79% were in group 2.

The results have found a simple but effective way to protect cardiovascular health for everyone, especially those at high risk of diabetes due to genetics. That is to reduce TV viewing time!

Specifically, watching TV for up to 1 hour a day reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 12% compared to watching 2 hours or more, according to the science news site ScitechDaily .

Notably, even people with a genetic predisposition to moderate and high diabetes, if they limited their TV viewing time to a maximum of 1 hour per day, did not have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

Even over the next 10 years, people with a high genetic risk of diabetes who watched TV for up to 1 hour a day still had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease than people with no risk but watched TV for 2 hours or more a day.

Limiting TV viewing time may protect heart health

Lead author Dr Mengyao Wang, from the University of Hong Kong, explained: “People with a genetic predisposition to diabetes can reduce their cardiovascular risk by limiting their TV viewing time to one hour per day. Thus, reducing TV viewing may play a role in preventing diabetes-related cardiovascular disease. This is particularly important because people with diabetes are at very high cardiovascular risk.”

The researchers concluded: Reducing TV viewing can benefit both people at high and low risk for diabetes. Limiting sitting time, by watching no more than 1 hour of TV per day, can help reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, even for people with a genetic predisposition to diabetes – who are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease.

They also warn that watching TV for two hours or more a day increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, according to ScitechDaily.
