Lunar New Year is the biggest food consumption occasion of the year, with typical dishes such as meat, fish, eggs, cakes, candies, alcohol, soft drinks, and oilseeds.

However, along with the increased demand for consumption, there are also many food safety issues, especially in food products that are widely used during Tet. Authorities have discovered and handled many food safety violations, causing concern for consumers.

Authorities inspect food establishments.

According to the Health Department's report, in 2024, 354,820 establishments were inspected, of which 22,073 establishments violated food safety.

The police force prosecuted 62 violations, an increase of nearly 88% compared to the previous year, with 97 defendants, an increase of more than 185%. These are alarming figures, showing that food safety violations in food production, processing, and consumption during Tet are on the rise.

According to information from the Central Interdisciplinary Steering Committee on Food Safety, the Lunar New Year 2025 is approaching, along with the festival season with many major events taking place across the country, attracting a large number of participants.

In this context, the demand for food consumption has increased, and food production and trading establishments have increased production and imported food to meet market demand. However, weather factors also have a significant impact on ensuring food quality and safety.

Specifically, the weather in the North is often humid, while the South is hot and sunny, creating favorable conditions for bacteria, mold, and viruses to grow, increasing the risk of food spoilage or contamination.

To ensure food safety during the 2025 Lunar New Year and Spring Festival season, the Central Interdisciplinary Steering Committee has established 5 central-level inspection teams to conduct food safety inspections in 10 provinces and cities.

In particular, inspection teams will focus on strictly handling violations related to food safety, in order to protect consumers' health. In Hanoi, from January 1, 2025, fines for food safety violations have doubled according to the provisions of the Capital Law 2024 and Resolution No. 49/2024 of the Hanoi People's Council.

To deal with the above situation, the Central Interdisciplinary Steering Committee on Food Safety has proposed to strengthen propaganda work and improve knowledge about food safety for all classes of people.

Raising awareness and responsibility of authorities at all levels, party organizations, cadres, party members and people is an important factor in ensuring food security and safety during the Lunar New Year and Spring festival season.

In addition, the Steering Committee also emphasized the responsibility of food production, trading and processing units in ensuring food quality for people during Tet. Everyone has the right to use safe food, especially during festivals and Lunar New Year.

To protect health during Tet, the Central Steering Committee on Food Safety has issued some important recommendations for consumers such as:

Do not buy food at unsafe establishments: Consumers need to pay attention to choosing reputable food production and trading establishments that ensure proper hygiene and food preservation processes.

Do not buy food products of unknown origin, with signs of spoilage, mold, or spoilage: These foods pose a risk to health, increasing the risk of infections or food poisoning.

Do not stock up on too much food during Tet: Stockpiling too much food not only reduces quality but can also cause waste. Consumers should buy just enough food to avoid using products that are not fresh, have lost nutrients or are moldy.

Don't cook too much food during Tet: Cooking too much food in a short time can lead to using dishes that are no longer fresh or lose nutrients.

Do not abuse alcohol and beer: Tet is the time when people often drink alcohol and beer, but it is important to note that you should not abuse it, especially when you do not know the origin of the product.

Do not eat strange or wild mushrooms: Wild mushrooms can contain dangerous toxins, causing serious food poisoning or even death if eaten.

Declaration of food poisoning: Consumers need to immediately notify medical facilities when experiencing food poisoning or foodborne diseases, to promptly handle and avoid spreading the disease.

During the 2025 Lunar New Year, to ensure the health of themselves and their families, consumers need to be extremely careful in choosing food, paying attention to the origin, quality of products and factors ensuring food safety and hygiene.

At the same time, food production and trading establishments also need to enhance their responsibility, comply with food production and processing procedures to protect public health, contributing to making Lunar New Year and the Spring Festival season a joyful and safe time for everyone.
