Cambodia Election: Mr. Hun Sen reveals the personnel to lead the National Assembly

On the evening of August 9, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen announced that Ms. Khuon Sodary, the current Second Vice President of the National Assembly, will hold the position of President of the 7th National Assembly of Cambodia, which is expected to hold its first session on August 21.

According to a VNA correspondent in Phnom Penh, in a recorded message sent via the Telegram messaging app, Prime Minister Hun Sen confirmed that the leadership of the 7th Cambodian National Assembly includes Khuon Sodary as President of the National Assembly, Cheam Yeap will continue to be First Vice President; while Vong Soth, Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, will hold the position of Second Vice President.

In the message, the current head of the Royal Government of Cambodia, who is also the President of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), said that this personnel plan was decided at the end of 2021.

According to Mr. Hun Sen, the nomination of Ms. Khuon Sodary to hold the position of President of the 7th National Assembly of this country aims to promote the role of women, as well as the role of female leaders.

According to the schedule, the 7th National Assembly of Cambodia will convene its first session and first meeting on August 21 and 22.

According to the results announced by the National Election Committee of Cambodia, in the election of the 7th National Assembly of Cambodia held on July 23, there were 125 candidates elected as MPs. Of these, 120 MPs were candidates of the CPP and 5 MPs were candidates of the royalist party FUNCINPEC.

The Cambodian Constitution stipulates that the first session of the National Assembly is convened and presided over by the King, under the direction of a senior member - the oldest elected candidate - to declare the status of each member of the new legislature.

This senior congressman is responsible for running the process of electing the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, as well as the personnel of specialized committees of the National Assembly at the request of the party with the most seats.

Election activities are conducted and decided by the method of voting with absolute majority of the total number of National Assembly members.

According to the list of candidates elected to the 7th National Assembly of Cambodia, Samdech Heng Samrin, 89 years old, current President of the National Assembly, is the oldest member./.
