Protecting the marine and island environment in Van Don

Việt NamViệt Nam26/08/2024

Van Don has 12 communes and towns, including 5 island communes. In recent times, the socio-economic development along the coast and in the waters of Bai Tu Long Bay has become a major challenge for environmental protection and the conservation of rare and unique ecosystems. Therefore, along with economic development, environmental protection work is always directed and implemented with many solutions by Party committees, authorities, departments, branches and organizations.

The District Party Executive Committee issued Resolution No. 03-NQ/HU, dated April 9, 2021, on strengthening the Party's leadership in converting floating materials in aquaculture to ensure environmental standards; developing a program and plan to implement Directive 13-CT/TU dated August 10, 2021 of the Provincial Party Standing Committee on strengthening the management and sustainable development of aquaculture; resolutely and determinedly implementing the conversion of floating materials to ensure environmental standards in aquaculture; establishing, approving and implementing the Project to improve environmental management and protection of Bai Tu Long Bay until 2025, with a vision to 2030.

The Fatherland Front and its member organizations always promote the role of supervision, social criticism, and contribute ideas to draft projects, programs on production development, associated with environmental protection, especially the issue of protecting the water environment during exploitation, aquaculture, environmental protection, and the ecosystem of Bai Tu Long Bay. At the same time, regularly propagate the Party and State's policies and laws on economic development associated with environmental protection; the responsibility of organizations and individuals in environmental protection... Thereby creating a strong change in the awareness and actions of each citizen.

In addition, departments, organizations, communes and towns actively and effectively implement the Project to improve the effectiveness of environmental protection in Bai Tu Long Bay; propagate and mobilize people not to use hard-to-decompose plastic bags, disposable plastic products; strictly comply with regulations on environmental protection in production, business and daily life activities. Build economic development models associated with environmental protection; convert floating materials in aquaculture to ensure environmental standards; participate in collecting foam buoys, waste at sea, along the coast... Thanks to that, up to now, the district has basically completed the conversion of foam buoys to HDPE plastic buoys to ensure environmental standards; develop planning, plan for aquaculture water surface allocation to improve the effectiveness of aquaculture water surface management and use.

In particular, at the end of April 2024, Van Don launched a program to reduce plastic waste in 5 island communes in the area to prevent plastic waste from the shore, not letting people and tourists follow garbage to the island. The locality has coordinated with functional units, the management unit of Ao Tien international passenger port, Cai Rong port and 5 island communes to urgently install synchronous billboards and posters with the theme "Do not bring plastic waste to the island" to propagate to people and tourists. Along with that, the district encourages tourists to leave plastic waste (bottles, cups, plastic bags) right at the ports.

Mr. Dao Van Vu, Permanent Vice Chairman of Van Don District People's Committee, said: Determining to limit single-use plastic waste right from the source of emission, the district has implemented recommendations to service businesses as well as people to join hands in implementing and moving towards signing a commitment; there is supervision during the implementation process, ensuring control of emission sources, towards sustainable tourism, without plastic waste.

Van Don is a place for aquaculture, exploitation and processing of a large amount of aquatic products in the province. Along with the advantages and development opportunities, there are always challenges in the treatment of waste and wastewater from aquatic production and processing activities. According to district statistics, each month, in the district, there are about 800-900 tons of oyster shells after being separated for packaging and processing, which need to be treated. The district has instructed people to take advantage of oyster shells to recycle for aquaculture, make fertilizers... Up to now, about 40% of oyster shells have been recycled into clinging materials, and continue to be released into the sea to serve oyster seed production; 50% are collected and recycled into fertilizers and animal feed; the remaining 10% is waste treated according to the solid waste treatment process.

Along with that, the solid waste collection and treatment system in the district has been invested in and built, ensuring environmental protection requirements. According to statistics, the total amount of domestic solid waste generated in the district is about 1,000 tons/month; of which about 96.6% is collected and treated centrally, 3.4% is buried. 100% of waste in urban areas is collected and treated centrally; in rural areas it is 95.6%. People in towns and communes actively participate in the "Green Sunday" movement, regularly cleaning village roads, alleys, collecting garbage on the beach...

The district also directed tourism businesses to review and inspect to promptly replace degraded equipment; fully arrange equipment to contain and collect waste generated from swimming and tourism activities. "Let's clean the sea" programs are organized regularly, contributing to changing the awareness and actions of all levels, sectors, businesses and people in marine environmental protection.

With the available potentials and advantages, along with the right direction, determination, joint efforts and consensus of the Party Committee, government and people of all ethnic groups in the district in economic development associated with environmental protection, Van Don will successfully achieve the goal of becoming a green island city, a center of island tourism with a synchronous and modern socio-economic infrastructure, contributing to the development of the province in the coming time.
