Baidu said in a statement Tuesday that Ernie 3.5, the latest version of its Ernie Bot model, surpassed “ChatGPT in terms of comprehensive capability scores” and outperformed OpenAI’s large language model GPT-4 “in some capabilities.”
The Beijing-based company cited a test conducted by Chinese newspaper China Science Daily using datasets including AGIEval and C-Eval, two benchmarks used to evaluate the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) models.
Baidu's announcement comes as the global buzz around AI sparked by ChatGPT has spread to China, prompting a slew of local companies to announce competing products.
Baidu was the first major Chinese tech company to launch an AI product to compete with ChatGPT when it announced Ernie Bot in March. Ernie Bot, which builds on Baidu's older Ernie 3.0 AI model, has been in invite-only testing for the past three months.
Other major Chinese tech companies, including Alibaba and Tencent Holdings, have also unveiled their own AI models.
Baidu says its new model comes with better inference efficiency and training that will be faster and cheaper in the future. Baidu also says its new model will support external “plugins.”
Plugins are additional applications that allow Baidu's AI to work in more specific scenarios, such as summarizing long texts and generating more accurate responses. ChatGPT also rolled out plugin support in March.
