As Russia continues to report victories from the front lines in Ukraine, a solution to the conflict is a difficult problem for Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky.
In an interview with CBS earlier this week, US Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her views on the possibility of direct communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
She has ruled out talks with the Russian president if Ukraine is not included in the process.
“Not bilateral without Ukraine, no. Ukraine must have a say in Ukraine’s future,” Harris said.
Dialogue with the Russian President to resolve the conflict through diplomatic negotiations was the idea of former US President Donald Trump.
But according to Kamala Harris, that is a sign of "surrender".
“He said, oh, he could finish on day one. You know what that is? It's about surrender,” Harris said.
Ms. Harris said that if Mr. Donald Trump became President of the United States, President Putin "would be sitting in Kiev right now".
In June this year, President Putin said Russia was ready to declare an immediate ceasefire and start peace talks as soon as Ukraine began withdrawing troops from the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions and canceled plans to join NATO.
However, he later ruled out any talks as long as Ukrainian troops were also occupying part of the Kursk Region.
Not only the US side, even the administration of Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky has continuously rejected the possibility of "negotiation" with Russia.
Last weekend, Mr Zelensky affirmed that he would continue to implement his "victory plan" with supporters from the West.
The list of targets that Mr Zelensky presented in the US last month was leaked to the media. The five-point plan leaked to the media included increased Western financial and economic aid to Kiev, Ukraine’s admission into NATO and the EU, and the authorization of long-range missile strikes on Russian territory.
The plans are said to have failed to impress US officials ahead of the upcoming election, with some unnamed officials describing them as "quite vague" and "largely a wish list," Bloomberg quoted.
Kiev has also said it has no plans to hold peace conference-style talks like the one held in Switzerland in June, where Russia, a party to the conflict, was not invited. A second conference was scheduled for November, but Ukraine has now said it will cancel it.
A senior aide to Ukrainian President Darya Zarivna told the media on October 8: "The second peace summit will not take place in November."
In an exclusive interview with The New Yorker last month in the situation room in Kiev, Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky said that negotiations with Russia were impossible.
“After the first peace summit, our partners saw that Russia was not prepared for any negotiations at all — this confirmed my message to them and my insistence that if they did not make Ukraine strong, they would never force Mr. Putin to negotiate fairly and on equal terms. Nobody believed me. They said, we will invite Russia to the second summit and Russia will have to come running.
Yes, now we have planned a second summit and Russia does not seem to be coming running," Zelensky said in the interview.
Is it possible to conduct peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine with the support of the future US President? The answer remains open.
