What do you think if Vietnam is the venue for the highly anticipated US-Russia summit?

After Tet, we had a friendly meeting between some Vietnamese people who have studied and lived abroad and some friends of many nationalities who have studied, worked and traveled in Vietnam. The topics were diverse, including feelings about Vietnamese culture, people, cuisine, the relationship between our country and the S-shaped land and hot international current affairs.
A natural question that comes up is, what do you think if Vietnam is the venue for the highly anticipated US-Russia summit? Understanding each other, many of you speak Vietnamese and English, so the conversation is quite open and lively. In short, “Vietnam number one”, “Vietnam is an ideal meeting place”, “good land attracts birds”… Several reasons come to mind:
First , Vietnam is a developing country with a fast growth rate, youthful, safe in both security and politics. The image of heads of state being welcomed by the people; freely visiting relics, landscapes, walking, enjoying Vietnamese culinary culture without needing a team of bodyguards surrounding them is convincing proof.
Second, the Vietnamese country and people always love peace, justice, and are trustworthy, loyal, active, and responsible friends of the international community.
Third, Vietnam has a clear, balanced, objective, consistent, constructive, and reasonable viewpoint on hot and complicated world issues, including the conflict in Ukraine.
In a phone call at Ukraine’s request on the afternoon of February 17, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha that Vietnam is a friend of Russia and Ukraine; emphasizing that disputes need to be resolved by peaceful means, in accordance with the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter. Vietnam supports and is ready to participate in mediation efforts of the international community to seek a lasting peaceful solution to the conflict with the participation of all relevant parties.
Fourth, Vietnam is the only country that maintains a comprehensive, balanced, and harmonious strategic partnership with three major powers: Russia, China, and the United States, even though they are "having problems with each other."
Vietnam advocates “closing the past, looking towards the future”, proactively building a bridge of friendship across the chasm with countries that once invaded it, so that the dark past will not repeat itself. All issues can be discussed and negotiated if there is good will.
That is the spirit that has the value of encouraging the resolution of crises in the world, including the Ukraine issue. If Vietnam is chosen, the Russia-US summit, the international conference on resolving the conflict that has lasted for nearly 3 years, will be extremely meaningful, continuing its historical value in the present and the future.
In 2014 , during his first term, President Donald Trump visited Vietnam twice, attending the AFEC Summit Week and making a state visit (November 2017) and attending the US-North Korea Summit with leader Kim Jong Un (February 2019). Russian President Vladimir Putin also visited Vietnam many times. On November 11, 2024, during a phone call with President Donald Trump after the election, General Secretary To Lam invited the US President to visit Vietnam again. He happily accepted.
If the two US and Russian leaders choose Vietnam as the venue for the summit, it will not be surprising.
Six, there are currently a number of locations being introduced to host this important international event. Vietnam has expressed its readiness to host, do its utmost, and ensure all conditions for the conference (if selected), considering it a contribution to resolving conflicts and crises, for peace and friendship in the world.
Combining the above factors, Vietnam is an attractive destination, with all the “heavenly time, geographical advantage, and human harmony”, creating a favorable environment for the US-Russia Summit or the multi-party negotiations after the summit. Holding it in Hanoi will contribute to increasing the international public’s attraction to the event.

The participants in the intimate conversation were not professional diplomats, high-ranking officials, or national representatives. But with understanding, sincerity, and frankness, it can be seen as a small survey, an objective voice about the appropriate location to hold a major event. Vietnam has done its best. The right to choose belongs to the people involved. International support is very important.
