The ancient house of Mr. Nguyen Huy Than in Truong Luu village (Kim Song Truong commune, Can Loc district, Ha Tinh).
Every spring, this ancient village is a place where memories and traditional culture come to be found.
Looking for traces of a hundred years
The humble village is located in the heart of Kim Song Truong commune (Can Loc, Ha Tinh). First-time visitors cannot help but be amazed by the ancient beauty of the over 600-year-old village.
According to records, the ancient village of Truong Luu, formed around the 15th century, included 4 villages: Dong Thac, Phuc Truong, Phuong Son and Tan Tien of Kim Song Truong commune.
This is also the place where the Nguyen Huy family of scholars came from, producing many famous people such as: Minister of Public Works Nguyen Huy Tuu, Third-class Doctor Nguyen Huy Oanh, Doctor Nguyen Huy Quynh and many other scholars and students who brought glory to the family.
In particular, the precious documents of the Nguyen Huy family preserved for generations include: Phuc Giang School Woodblocks, Hoang Hoa Su Trinh Do, and the system of Han Nom documents of Truong Luu village, which have been recognized as World Memory Heritage in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, Truong Luu also preserves many ancient houses that are 100 - 300 years old.
Walking around the village, it is not difficult to come across ancient houses located in a quiet campus with many cool green trees, winding entrances embracing stone wells... The common point of the ancient houses is that they are all made of ironwood or built with red bricks, lime mortar made from shells. The system of wooden beams, columns, and rafters are elaborately carved, and inside the house hang many horizontal lacquered boards carved in Han Nom characters. Many horizontal lacquered boards and parallel sentences are of high value.
Standing out in the system of ancient houses in Truong Luu is the house of Mr. Nguyen Huy Than's family (Phuong Son village). This is the oldest house located in the garden of Mr. Tham (Nguyen Huy Oanh) - one of the "eight landscapes" of Truong Luu, which witnessed the discussions of poetry, literature, and world affairs between scholars, literary authors of the Nguyen Huy - Truong Luu family with writers, poets, and politicians in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Although over hundreds of years, over time of use, the house has some degraded items, the family has renovated and repaired but still ensures the original condition including the works: perennial garden, well, dry tank, yard...
The house is built entirely of jackfruit wood, with an architectural style of 3 rooms and 2 wings. The house is especially cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The interior space is divided into rooms with the functions of worship, rest and reception.
The church area is located right in the center with many objects dating back hundreds of years. The system of beams, columns, and rafters is carved very delicately. Each room and object is molded by artisans with many characters and writings in very special positions.

Over hundreds of years, the detailed items in the house remain intact.
Persevering in preserving the old ways
Near Mr. Nguyen Huy Than's house is the house of Mrs. Tran Thi Lan (daughter-in-law of the Nguyen Huy family). The house is currently being looked after and used by Mr. Nguyen Huy Hung and his wife. After many ups and downs of history, the house still retains its original appearance since its construction.
In Mr. Hung’s mind, each ancient house is not only beautiful in its architectural features, but also contains many childhood memories and traditional cultural values. It is not only a place to receive guests, worship ancestors, rest and live for the family, but also a symbol of the connection between family members through many generations. Preserving ancient houses is the foundation of cultural education, preserving the identity of the family to pass on to the next generation of children.
Mrs. Minh, Mr. Hung's wife, also said that regardless of rain or shine, every morning, the couple cleans the old house. All items are placed neatly and cleanly. Preserving and maintaining the house, in addition to its value for descendants in the family to know their ancestors' traditions, is also a place to welcome groups including students to visit and learn about the traditions, customs, and lifestyles of ancient celebrities.
An ancient house that has been restored to its former glory.
Mr. Nguyen Huy Hung and his wife - the caretakers of several ancient houses - are trying to preserve and conserve the family's 'treasures'.
Every year, the ancient houses in Truong Luu welcome hundreds of teachers and students to visit and learn. Ms. Nguyen Thi Quy - Principal of Phan Kinh Primary School (Can Loc District) said that the school always focuses on educational activities on local history and traditions.
“The cultural values in Truong Luu are the pride of every local resident. Those values need to be gradually nurtured and passed down over a long period of time to the next generation.
Every month, the school organizes for students in grades 4 and 5 to visit and learn about local heritages and visit and clean up at the Cultural Heritage Conservation Center of Truong Luu village. Through this, the students are taught pride and how to behave towards the traditional values of their ancestors,” Ms. Quy informed.
The People's Committee of Kim Song Truong commune has also proposed that relevant levels and sectors should soon appraise and recognize ancient house relics in the area, thereby having policies to support part of the funding for restoration and embellishment to preserve cultural features for future generations. This is also a highlight in the Truong Luu cultural relic complex that will be exploited in tourist tours.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Son, Vice Chairman of Kim Song Truong Commune People's Committee said: "To preserve and promote the traditional values of ancient houses, in recent times, the local government has promoted and mobilized descendants in the family with the hope that they will promote their role and responsibility in mobilizing resources to preserve and restore degraded items."
