"These jerseys were worn by Messi in the first half of each match for the Argentina national team at the 2022 World Cup, including the jersey used in the final match against the French national team. The total final sale price for these jerseys was 7.8 million USD (about more than 189 billion VND), which is also the highest price for a sports memorabilia sold in 2023," said the announcement of the auction company Sotheby's.
6 Messi jerseys to be auctioned
"These shirts are not only a tangible reminder of one of the most important moments in the history of the sport, but also have a connection to the peak of the career of the most decorated player in modern football history," Brahm Wachter, head of Sotheby's auction company, shared in the announcement of the auction of Messi's 2022 World Cup shirts.
Six shirts of the Argentinean football legend were displayed at Sotheby's headquarters in New York City (USA), during a two-week online auction that just ended. The identity of the buyer of these shirts was not disclosed.
The price of 7.8 million USD is considered lower than the auction organizer's expectation because they expected to sell for about 10 million USD.
The record for a sports memorabilia item sold at auction is still held by legendary basketball player Michael Jordan (American). The jersey Michael Jordan wore in the 1998 NBA Finals sold for $10.1 million at Sotheby's in New York in 2022.
Messi is 36 years old and plays for Inter Miami in the MLS (USA).
Sotheby's also said that part of the proceeds from the sale of Messi's six jerseys will be donated to the UNICAS Project, a project initiated by the Sant Joan de Deu Children's Hospital in Barcelona (Spain), with the support of the Messi Foundation, to help children with rare diseases.
Messi is currently playing for Inter Miami in the MLS (USA). He has played for Barcelona for 17 years. The Argentine star has just won the 8th Golden Ball of his career, and continues to be in the top 3 for The Best 2023 (Best Player of the Year) organized by FIFA.
