That is what we witnessed at the 2024 festival of traditional drum and gong performance clubs and dance clubs organized by the People's Committee of Tay Giang district recently.
The festival gathered hundreds of artisans and non-professional actors from the villages and communes in the district to participate in performances and reenactment of festival rituals to open the year to thank the forest, celebrate the new harvest, new rice... in the Co Tu community.
Compete with artists
Appearing in traditional tree bark costumes, the Tr'Hy commune's artisans brought to the festival an impressive and unique performance recreating the space of the new gươl festival, revolving around the ceremony of reporting to ancestors about the community's common activities, inviting villagers to a meeting, to the ritual of worshipping the gods and performing the tang tung dance, da da combined with gong drums...
Standing in front of the pole, village elder Colau Blao - a typical artisan of Tr'Hy commune blew the trumpet, inviting villagers to join in the festival.
As soon as the village elder finished speaking, dozens of Co Tu men and women excitedly danced around the pole, recreating the whole scene of celebrating the new year.
To participate in the festival, said elder Colau Blao, the artisans had to spend many days practicing, considering it their responsibility to the community and contributing to the success of the festival.

“In order to avoid duplication in costumes and performance rituals, we discussed bringing to the festival traditional bark costumes combined with reenacting the original new gươl celebration ritual of the Co Tu people.
This is considered a competition between artisans in the district, so we must do our best to bring the best and most traditional things.
Through this festival, we want to educate and create opportunities to pass on the art of gong drums, musical values, tang tung dance, and da da to the community, especially the generations, in joining hands to preserve and promote the traditional identity of our nation" - Elder Colau Blao shared.
With an engaging and interesting performance, the act reenacting the new gươl celebration ritual by the Tr'Hy commune artisans was awarded the overall A prize by the jury; at the same time, the efforts of the Co Tu artisans in preserving and promoting traditional cultural identity, especially the Colau Blao elder.
According to Mr. Poloong Plenh - Deputy Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Tay Giang district, the festival is not only a performance, but also a connection between generations, helping the Co Tu culture to be continued and passed on.
Contribute to cultural preservation
Mr. Briu Hung - Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Tay Giang district said that throughout the performance at the festival, the artists were selected to perform excerpts of traditional festival rituals, from celebrating the new harvest, opening the year to thank the forest, to the new rice eating ceremony, celebrating the harvest day...

In particular, it encourages the exploitation of festival aspects to create unique tourism products to attract tourists, promote the preservation of cultural identity, and increase income for local communities.
“At this festival, the artists not only contributed to the reenactment of the rituals of worshipping the gods, but also directly performed traditional musical instruments combined with skillful dances.
All of this is a demonstration opportunity for young people to enjoy, learn and raise awareness of the responsibility to preserve traditional values right in their villages, schools and agencies," said Mr. Briu Hung.
Mr. Arat Blui - Vice Chairman of Tay Giang District People's Committee said that with the goal of preserving and promoting the Co Tu cultural identity, every year the locality builds a plan to organize traditional festivals and celebrations for the community to create a living space, perform gong drum art and traditional tang tung and da da dances.

Thereby, raising awareness of preserving and promoting the long-standing cultural values of the Co Tu people in the district, especially for the young generation; at the same time contributing to attracting tourists and developing local tourism...
According to Mr. Arat Blui, the Co Tu people have a diverse cultural treasure and many unique artistic values, from the art of drums and gongs, tang dance, da da to folk songs and traditional music.
In recent years, although conservation efforts have been carried out, there is still a risk of loss. The festival is an opportunity to bring the typical artistic values of the Co Tu closer to the community and young people.
