On the afternoon of May 18, the National Children's Hospital issued guidelines for preventing and treating heatstroke in children during the summer.

Specifically, in the current hot weather conditions, children are particularly sensitive and susceptible to heatstroke. Children with heatstroke can have increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, convulsions, coma, and even death if not detected early and treated promptly.

To prevent children from getting sunstroke and heatstroke in the summer, the National Children's Hospital recommends that parents take 8 specific measures:

• On hot days, children should wear cool, sweat-absorbent clothes. Children should not be allowed to exercise at high intensity and continuously for more than 2 hours in the sun. If children feel uncomfortable, stop exercising and go to a shady place to rest.

• Breastfeed children under 6 months of age more often and mothers should also drink more water. For children 6 months and older, you can give them boiled water to cool so that they urinate at least 6 to 8 times a day. For older children, parents should also remind them to drink water regularly to avoid dehydration.

• Do not suddenly change your child's environment. If your child has just come home from the bathroom, avoid putting him or her in an air-conditioned room right away. Do not let your child run or jump between the air-conditioned room and the hot space outside.

• Fully equip your child with hats, clothes, glasses, masks or carefully cover them before going out in the sun.

• If you take your child by car, never leave him/her alone in the car. When parking, choose a cool place, avoid direct sunlight on the car, which can increase the temperature.

• Bathe your children in cool water when the outside temperature is high and the sun is hot. This will help regulate their body temperature.

• Provide adequate nutrition and vitamins for children to increase resistance and health.

• For older children, parents should encourage them to exercise regularly to help their bodies become more flexible, full of vitality, and increase their ability to adapt to harsh weather.

Also according to the National Children's Hospital, if you see your child showing signs of heatstroke or heat exhaustion such as: high fever over 40 degrees Celsius, nausea and vomiting; hot, dry, red skin; increased heart rate, difficulty breathing; possible hallucinations such as stuttering, uncontrolled behavior, convulsions or coma; pain, throbbing headache..., parents need to stay calm and quickly take the following measures:

- Call a doctor or ambulance immediately.

- Cool your baby as quickly as possible by taking him to a cool, airy place. Cool him with cool water and fan him. However, it should be noted that in cases of sunstroke or heatstroke, fever reducers such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol will not reduce the child's fever.

- If the baby is in a coma, call for support and perform CPR immediately.

- If your baby is conscious, give him a glass of cold water every 15 minutes until he feels better.

- Continuously monitor your baby's heart and lung temperature while waiting for the doctor and ambulance.

In addition, heat exhaustion is also a condition that many children encounter in the summer when the temperature rises and they are active and exercise for many hours in the heat. Therefore, parents also need to pay attention, when children have symptoms of cold, pale skin; sweating; dizziness; fainting; weakness, they need to give first aid immediately by: Laying the child in a cool, airy place; giving the child a glass of cold water every 15 minutes until the child feels more alert. After giving the child 2-3 glasses of water, take the child to the nearest medical facility for the doctor to assess the dehydration and provide appropriate rehydration treatment.
