Regarding the case of children being injected with expired vaccines at the Thang Binh Commune Health Station (Nong Cong District), Mr. Le Dang Khoa, Director of Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital, said that after nearly 2 weeks of active treatment, 3 children's health had stabilized and they were discharged from the hospital on the afternoon of May 22.
3/4 of children who were injected with expired vaccines were discharged from the hospital on the afternoon of May 22.
Currently, only Ph.Ng.MD, born in March 2023, is still being treated at the hospital due to high liver enzyme index, in which GOT index is 511, GPT index is 350 and the patient has positive HbSAg.
According to Mr. Le Dang Khoa, Ph.Ng.MD has hepatitis B causing high liver enzymes, which is completely unrelated to the expired 6-in-1 vaccine. The hospital will continue to treat liver enzymes so that Ph.Ng.MD can be discharged in the next few days.
It is known that during the hospitalization, all 5 children (including 2 twins in the same family, unable to distinguish which child had expired vaccine, so the family took both children to Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital for monitoring, along with the remaining 3 children) contracted COVID-19 due to cross-infection and had to be treated in isolation. Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital mobilized the best equipment, medicine and human resources, along with professional support from the National Children's Hospital and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology to treat the children. After their health stabilized and they tested negative for COVID-19, 3 children were discharged from the hospital.
As reported by Thanh Hoa Newspaper, on the morning of May 9, Thang Binh Commune Health Station (Nong Cong District) carried out a vaccination service for 15 children of the right age, of which 4 children were vaccinated with expired vaccines. Immediately after the incident, the Health sector held a meeting of the Professional Council, the Industry's Advisory Council on Vaccines and asked for advice from the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology and the National Children's Hospital. The Professional Council also assessed that the cause of the incident was due to the vaccine preservation process at Thang Binh Commune Health Station not being in accordance with regulations; the vaccination staff did not comply with the principle of "3 checks, 5 comparisons" during the vaccination process, leading to confusion. Nong Cong District Health Center has temporarily suspended 2 health staff involved in the vaccination work at Thang Binh Commune Health Station to serve the investigation and clarify the preservation process as well as vaccination for children.
