On the morning of May 6, Comrade Lai Van Hoan, Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, and leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development inspected the work of preventing and controlling pests and diseases of spring rice in the districts of Dong Hung, Thai Thuy, and Vu Thu.

Through the inspection of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, the density of small leaf rollers after the first spraying is still very high, the density of 1st, 2nd, 3rd instar larvae is on average 100 - 150 individuals/m ² ; in high places 200 - 300 individuals/m ² , in some cases 500 - 700 individuals/m ² ; 150 - 300 eggs/m ² . In the first phase, farmers organized spraying to control planthoppers combined with small leaf rollers. Currently, in the fields where spraying has not been done, the density is still high, from 3,000 - 5,000 individuals/m ² . Neck blast disease tends to develop on susceptible varieties that flower around 5/5.

To protect spring rice, the Provincial People's Committee directed localities to spray small leaf roller insecticide for the second time from May 4 to 8 on 63,326 hectares.

By the end of May 5, according to the report of the agricultural sector, local farmers had sprayed 22,571 hectares, accounting for 35.6% of the area that needed to be prevented and controlled. Of which, Thai Thuy district sprayed 7,200 hectares/10,000 hectares, Dong Hung district sprayed 3,200/9,000 hectares, and Vu Thu district sprayed 700 hectares/7,200 hectares.

Inspecting the direction and organization of the second spraying of pesticides to prevent and control small leaf rollers in Dong Son commune (Dong Hung), Tan Hoc (Thai Thuy), Vu Vinh (Vu Thu), the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested the districts to strengthen the propaganda work on the second round of pest prevention and control (especially small leaf rollers) so that people are aware of the meaning and importance of the prevention and control; the area to be sprayed is according to the recommendations of the professional agency.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development directed specialized units to continue to coordinate, urge, and guide the second pest control in localities; closely monitor the fields, check and evaluate the density of pests and the effectiveness of control, thereby advising the Provincial People's Committee on timely measures to protect spring rice. Localities increased inspection, urging and directing the second pest control work; assigned leaders and technical staff to go to the grassroots to guide pest control; ensured the provision of sufficient and good quality materials to serve the people. During the second spraying period, the weather was forecast to be unfavorable, localities urged and propagated farmers to take advantage of the dry weather to urgently spray pesticides; monitored and inspected areas that did not ensure technical standards, sprayed in the rain to have timely assessment and advice.
