Exporting to 'difficult' markets: Good quality goods at good prices do not necessarily mean they will sell

DNVN - The EU market is not only concerned with product quality and price, but also how the product is made, whether workers are guaranteed minimum conditions or not... Sustainable development is a long-term story, but businesses need to pay attention if they want to participate in the global trade race.

At the Export Promotion Forum 2024 with the theme "Promoting Green Exports" on December 4 in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said that sustainable development (SD) has become a trend of the times, guiding the development strategy of each country. In particular, economic SD is considered a fundamental pillar, a premise for implementing social development and environmental protection. Green and sustainable growth is not only an inevitable trend but has become a prerequisite for maintaining competitiveness and ensuring long-term development of economies.

Important policies such as the European Green Deal, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP) or the Biodiversity Strategy 2030 are having a major impact on the way growth, economic cooperation, trade and investment are taking place in the world. These policies not only focus on emission reduction targets but also set stricter standards on social responsibility and environmental protection, requiring exporting countries to change their production methods and approaches to meet increasingly high demands.

"Vietnam, with its existing potential and advantages, is facing many great opportunities to become an important link in the global supply chain, especially in the field of exporting green and sustainable goods, promoting investment in renewable energy, cleaner production, digital economy, and circular economy. Preparing Vietnam's export sources to effectively adapt to sustainable standards is vital to the Vietnamese economy," Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan emphasized.

Seizing this opportunity will not only help Vietnam meet the demands of the international market but also contribute to enhancing the national position, realizing the commitment to contribute to global sustainable development goals. This transformation requires a synchronous strategy, including the Government's orientation through incentive and support mechanisms and policies, the proactiveness of enterprises in investing in implementing green transformation solutions and the spirit of cooperation among related parties.

Mr. Andri Meier - Deputy Head of Development Cooperation, Embassy of Switzerland in Vietnam commented that in the context of rapidly changing international trade, the risk of fragmentation is increasingly significant, and environmental challenges are increasing. Therefore, sustainable development is no longer a choice but a must and must be done as soon as possible. Currently, the Vietnamese Government and enterprises are paying more attention to sustainable products to adapt to market demands.

The current requirements for sustainable development are both a challenge and an opportunity to increase the capacity of Vietnamese enterprises and create decent jobs for the people. Vietnam is aiming for a high-income economy, achieving dual goals. The cooperation program between Vietnam and Switzerland for the period 2025 - 2028 will focus on three main pillars: promoting sustainable trade, improving the capacity of domestic enterprises; promoting sustainable finance; enhancing resilience to climate change, promoting the development of a low-carbon economy. Thereby supporting Vietnam in its journey towards a high-income economy, achieving dual goals, and having better resilience.

Giving recommendations to businesses, Mr. Nguyen Hai Minh - Vice President of the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham) said that the word "green" only reflects a part of sustainable development. With the EU, they set standards related to ESG (environment - society - governance), one of the conditions that Vietnamese businesses need to pay attention to with European partners. ESG standards reflect the EU and global requirements for sustainable development. They not only set conditions and commitments within the bloc, but the EU also sets sustainable development standards and integrates them into trade conditions in FTAs, thereby spreading the message to businesses about the need to be aware of sustainable development.

Mr. Minh noted that before the EU's general regulations, European enterprises had their own regulations. Accordingly, the larger the enterprise, the higher the standards. Therefore, Vietnamese enterprises must meet those requirements when working with European partners.

"The EU is not only concerned with product quality and price, but also how the products are made and whether workers are guaranteed minimum conditions. Sustainable development is a long-term story but it is a prerequisite that businesses need to pay attention to if they want to participate in the current global trade race," said the Vice President of EuroCham.
