The agribusiness and Fintech market is expected to reach $1.7 billion by 2022, according to a report by global venture capital firm AgFunder.
Recently, AgFunder decided to invest in a number of startup projects in the agricultural sector.
From more than 600 applications, Vietnamese startup DHF Platforms (Dalat Hill Farms) was selected and received investment capital.
DHF Platforms works with smallholder farmers to process fresh produce into value-added goods, bringing them to market six times faster and fresher than usual, at half the price.
The project also helps increase transparency and traceability through the integration of technology solutions into the supply chain.
To ensure adequate supply of products to B2B supermarkets and convenience stores, DHF Platforms has signed contracts with many small-scale farmers and supported them in converting to growing new crop varieties with higher profit value, production cycles lasting less than 30 days, ensuring investment cash flow. In particular, the company is a pioneer in producing instant salads in Vietnam.
Angela Tay, an expert at AgFunder, said that Vietnam is an agricultural country. Selling quality vegetables to Singapore and Hong Kong markets is better than importing vegetables from distant markets such as Australia, Europe and the US. This helps reduce carbon emissions and the products are fresher and cheaper.
The big challenge is that farmers have little experience growing new varieties, said the DHF Platforms leader. To maintain the contract farming model, the project provides farmers with seeds, nurseries, and guidance services on GAP production processes.
In addition, DHF Platforms also establishes cooperatives, engages in cooperation with NGOs and businesses to provide training and monitoring services.
Currently, DHF Platforms focuses on logistics and farming. In the near future, the project will release software that allows farmers to update their farm logs directly on the platform. This will improve traceability and collect real-time farm supply chain data.
Before DHF Platforms, AgFunder invested in startups Tepbac (Farmext shrimp and fish farm automation and management platform) and Cabinext electrical cabinets (Envisor environmental measuring devices).
