The mountainous border areas have valuable trees such as the cluster of 3 kapok - purple banyan - muom trees at Ky Sam temple (Cao Bang city) or the 300-year-old dracontomelon tree at Soc Giang border gate (Ha Quang, Cao Bang), located close to the Vietnam - China border, up to 38m high, trunk diameter 3.13m. Many people know about Suoi Giang tea (Van Chan, Yen Bai) but will surely be surprised by a group of 400 trees with ages from 1 to 3 centuries that have been recognized as heritage trees. A tree that has become a symbol of the Central Highlands is the kơ nia tree (also known as the civet tree), popular in the South Central region, with several heritage trees such as in Binh Chuong (Binh Son, Quang Ngai) or Khanh Trung (Khanh Vinh, Khanh Hoa). Also in the Central Highlands, many banyan trees or cajuput trees have been recorded, along with trees of special origin such as two camphor trees at Bao Dai Palace (Buon Ma Thuot, Dak Lak) or the Bodhi tree in Yang Lanh (Buon Don, Dak Lak) planted by a monk from Laos 140 years ago. Ancient trees in conservation areas attract tourists such as the banyan tree on Son Tra Peninsula, which is the habitat of the red-shanked douc langur, or the banyan tree along Ta Dung Lake (Dak Glong, Dak Nong), a favorite destination for backpackers. There are many trees that are hundreds of years old, marking the long-standing residence of Vietnamese people such as the 750-year-old kapok tree planted by a princess of the Tran Dynasty at Mo Temple (Kien Thuy, Hai Phong), the row of 17 ancient banyan trees in Do Son or the 13-root purple banyan tree also in Hai Phong, a coastal area with many historical imprints. The ancient village of Phuoc Tich (Phong Dien, Thua Thien Hue) has a beautiful landscape along the O Lau River with ancient trees such as the banyan tree and the 500-600-year-old banyan tree. The roof of the village communal house is always associated with large and beautiful trees such as the banyan tree of Nom village communal house (Van Lam, Hung Yen), the banyan tree at the gate of Phu Hau communal house (Lap Thach, Vinh Phuc) or temples and pagodas cannot lack a great green canopy like the myrtle tree of Bo Da pagoda (Viet Yen, Bac Giang), the banyan tree - banyan tree at Lam Kinh relic site (Tho Xuan, Thanh Hoa).
The first recorded heritage tree of the Mekong Delta is the tree area in Gian Gua (Phong Dien, Can Tho), a type of banyan tree in flooded terrain that forms a network of intertwined trunks, twisting like a giant net spread over an area of up to 4,000m2, with an age of about 150 years, associated with the relics of land reclamation and the revolutionary period. The Southern region also has a white mai tree over 300 years old in Phu Tu communal house (Phu Hung, Ben Tre), one of the "famous trees" for the symbolic flower of the South. Associated with the Oc Eo cultural site in Tri Ton (An Giang) are 700-year-old tung trees and 300-year-old tamarind trees. Even in new lands, there are old trees such as a mango tree over 340 years old in Vinh Trach Dong (Bac Lieu).
In remote island areas, there are trees that can withstand storms such as the banyan tree in Con Dao, the phong ba tree in Song Tu Tay island or the banyan tree in Truong Sa Lon and Nam Yet islands - islands in the Truong Sa archipelago off the East Sea.
Right in the center of Hanoi, there are many ancient trees that have created the landscape of the old urban space such as the kapok tree by Hoan Kiem Lake, the banyan tree on Hang Trong Street, in front of Quan Thanh Temple... Some strange trees such as 7 Sang Dao trees (Swietenia macrophylla King) in the campus of the University of Natural Sciences - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, associated with the history of the establishment of Indochina University in the early 20th century.
The birth of an independent Vietnam is also associated with a place with a famous ancient tree: the Tan Trao banyan tree (Son Duong, Tuyen Quang). A song depicts this symbol: “The shadow of the Tan Trao banyan tree holds a passionate voice. The sunlight on Ba Dinh still chokes my heart” (Singing in the middle of Pac Bo forest – Nguyen Tai Tue).
The trees are as old as the founding years of the nation and have experienced the changes of the earth and sky, and are the heritages that prove the rich ecosystem of Vietnam. Under the green canopy, people today can still find the story of the origin, of the endless life cycle full of spring on this earth.
