In order to increase the value of agricultural production, especially the value of commercial rice products, since 2017, Vinh Linh district has encouraged and mobilized farmers to produce rice in an organic direction through chain linkage with enterprises and cooperatives (HTX) from the stage of seeds, agricultural materials to product consumption.

After more than 6 years of implementation, the organic rice production model linked to the value chain has proven to be clearly effective, bringing many benefits to producers and the environment, creating favorable conditions for expanding the area in the district.
To implement the model, Vinh Linh district has reviewed the planning of organic rice production areas including Vinh Long, Vinh Thuy and Vinh Lam communes. Investing in improving fields, irrigation canal systems and land consolidation to form an organic rice production area with an area of 25 hectares of Sa Trung Cooperative, 30 hectares of Thuong Hoa Cooperative, Vinh Long commune.
Up to now, the whole district has 8 cooperatives with 587 farming households participating in organic rice production, linking to consume products with a total area of 158 hectares. Results from production seasons show that the average yield is 6 tons/ha, bringing in an income of 49 million VND/ha. In particular, the use of a closed, concentrated process from sowing to harvesting rice has reduced post-harvest losses by 5-7%.
Currently, there are 2 enterprises that are associated with organic rice production, organic rice with cooperatives, namely Song Gianh Corporation Joint Stock Company (Quang Binh) and Quang Tri Trading Corporation Joint Stock Company. During the planning and production development process, the products have built a brand and have a consumer market. Currently, the associated companies have gradually stabilized the output market, created the Vinh Lam organic rice brand and are certifying Vinh Linh organic rice.
As a cooperative that implements organic rice production on a large area, Duc Xa Agricultural Cooperative, Vinh Thuy Commune has done a good job of mobilizing people to consolidate land, creating conditions for building large model fields, easily applying scientific and technical advances to rice production, bringing high economic efficiency. In the summer-autumn crop of 2023, the cooperative cooperated with Song Gianh Corporation Joint Stock Company to produce and consume 33 hectares of organic rice products.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, Director of Duc Xa Agricultural Cooperative, said that people have raised awareness about organic farming methods that do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides, but only use organic fertilizers and microbial products from herbs, creating a safe environment for producers.
The average annual yield of organic rice is 6 tons/ha/crop (fresh rice), almost equivalent to conventional rice production. However, production costs are lower due to not using chemical fertilizers or pesticides, the post-harvest loss rate is low and the selling price is higher than conventional rice, so the average income per hectare after deducting costs is 3 - 4 million VND/ha higher than conventional rice production.
Mr. Hai was also trusted to hold the role of Director of Vinh Linh Organic Rice Production Cooperative Union with the participation of 881 members from 4 cooperatives, including Duc Xa, Thuy Ba Dong (Vinh Thuy commune), Thuong Hoa (Vinh Long commune), Dang Xa (Vinh Lam commune), established by Vinh Linh District People's Committee at the end of 2023.
Vinh Linh Organic Rice Production Cooperative Union is responsible for producing organic rice varieties, organic rice, high-quality rice, organic rice products, processing and providing biological services for organic product development, transferring scientific and technological applications in biological products.
“Recently, the district has had a project to build a system for preliminary processing and processing of Vinh Linh rice at Duc Xa Cooperative with infrastructure items such as factories, yards, roads, building a rice drying system with 3 drying ovens, including 2 ovens with a capacity of 30 tons/batch, 1 oven with a capacity of 10 tons/batch, building a system for processing organic rice, packaging, and labeling products.
However, up to now, the cooperative has only invested in building a factory. We hope that the province will pay attention to arranging funding to implement the project to create facilities to meet the requirements of organic rice production according to a closed process," Mr. Hai shared.
Along with the establishment of the Union of Organic Rice Production Cooperatives, in the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, Vinh Linh district will implement an organic rice production project with an area of 158.1 hectares, including Vinh Thuy commune with 93.6 hectares, Vinh Long 20 hectares and Vinh Lam 44.53 hectares. The total investment cost of the project is 2.16 billion VND, of which the people will contribute over 1.3 billion VND.
The district implements a mechanism to support rice varieties and some types of fertilizers, but not more than 50% for 119.53 hectares of cooperatives Duc Xa, Thuy Ba Ha, Tien My, Dang Xa, Thuong Hoa with varieties of quality such as DV108, ADI28, ST25, HN6, HG12.
In 2024, the district aims to produce 150 hectares of organic rice, of which 50 hectares are certified organic, and strives to achieve 300 hectares of organic rice production by 2025, of which 100 hectares are certified organic. With the current conditions in Vinh Linh district, organic rice production still faces many difficulties because land, water resources, and varieties... do not meet production processes. Therefore, to achieve this goal, the district continues to invest in improving fields and irrigation canal systems to serve organic rice production areas.
To find partners to link up to consume products, the district aims to link up with retail cooperatives in the province, enterprises such as Quang Tri Trading Corporation Joint Stock Company, Song Gianh Corporation Joint Stock Company, TH TRUE MILK Company... On the other hand, continue to promote propaganda to raise people's awareness of the benefits of organic rice production, increase the organization of training courses, guide rice planting and care techniques... to increase production value.
