Vietnam is ready to support and promote rice trade cooperation with Timor-Leste.

On September 5, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao on the occasion of attending the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated Mr. Xanana Gusmao on being elected as Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, leading the new Government for the 2023-2028 term; expressed his belief that under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Timor-Leste will continue to achieve many great achievements in national construction and development, gradually affirming its role and position in the region and the world.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomed Timor-Leste’s participation at the 43rd ASEAN Summit; reaffirmed that Vietnam, together with other ASEAN member countries, will actively support and assist Timor-Leste in the process of becoming an official member of ASEAN.

In order to promote the traditional friendship and closer connection, the two Prime Ministers agreed to increase the exchange of high-level delegations and all levels, starting with the visit of the President of Timor Leste to Vietnam.

The two Prime Ministers emphasized the need to effectively implement signed agreements, promptly complete negotiations and sign the Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement, and ratify the Trade Agreement between the two countries; effectively exploit the fields of trade - investment, tourism, culture, education and people-to-people exchange; at the same time, focus on exploiting new areas of cooperation, suitable to the development needs of Timor-Leste and the potential and strengths of Vietnam such as agriculture - forestry - fishery, digital transformation, green transformation...

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked Timor-Leste to support and create favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to participate in cooperation, business and investment projects, and to completely resolve remaining legal issues in order to encourage foreign investment in Timor-Leste.

Sharing Timor-Leste’s concerns about the risk of food shortage due to the impact of declining global rice export supply and climate change, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam is ready to support and promote rice trade cooperation with Timor-Leste; the two sides need to soon discuss and sign a rice trade agreement between the two governments to create a long-term legal framework and stabilize cooperation.

For his part, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao affirmed that Timor Leste always attaches importance to promoting relations with Vietnam; agreed with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's proposals to promote cooperation, especially in the fields of telecommunications, trade-investment, and rice cooperation.

The Prime Minister of Timor Leste emphasized the important contributions of Telemor (Viettel) to the development of Timor-Leste's telecommunications industry; committed to actively resolving problems of foreign investors in Timor Leste, including Viettel.

The two Prime Ministers affirmed to continue supporting each other and coordinating effectively at regional and international multilateral forums.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh respectfully invited Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao to visit Vietnam and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao happily accepted the invitation.
